Phylogeny of the Squirrels (Rodentia, Sciuridae)
نویسنده
چکیده
A number of phylogenetic studies have been performed on the family Sciuridae. This work seeks to validate and extend existing phylogenetic studies of Sciuridae with an analysis of the divergence times of a selected set of species. A total of five genes; 2 mitochrontrial ribosomal RNA genes (12S, 16S), a mitochrontrial protein coding gene (cytb) and two nuclear genes (IRBP, RAG1) were studied across 65 representative species. Phylogenetic inference using a variety of methods validated prior molecular studies. Analysis of species divergence times using representative fossil data was performed to better define the patterns of speciation.

Nuclear DNA phylogeny of the squirrels (Mammalia: Rodentia) and the evolution of arboreality from c-myc and RAG1.
Although the family Sciuridae is large and well known, phylogenetic analyses are scarce. We report on a comprehensive molecular phylogeny for the family. Two nuclear genes (c-myc and RAG1) comprising approximately 4500 bp of data (most in exons) are applied for the first time to rodent phylogenetics. Parsimony, likelihood, and Bayesian analyses of the separate gene regions and combined data rev...

We report the result of an examination for blood and intestinal protozoa in 12 specimens of the red squirrel Sciurus spadiceus (Rodentia: Sciuridae) from Birroque, municipality of Placido de Castro, state of Acre, Brazil. No parasites were detected in thin, Giemsa-stained blood films of the animals, but culture of the blood of three in Difco B45 medium blood-agar slants gave rise to isolates of...
متن کاملSciurid phylogeny and the paraphyly of Holarctic ground squirrels (Spermophilus).
The squirrel family, Sciuridae, is one of the largest and most widely dispersed families of mammals. In spite of the wide distribution and conspicuousness of this group, phylogenetic relationships remain poorly understood. We used DNA sequence data from the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene of 114 species in 21 genera to infer phylogenetic relationships among sciurids based on maximum parsimony a...
متن کاملPostpartum and lactational estrus: a comparative analysis in rodentia.
Virgin rodents exhibiting cycling estrus have traditionally been used for comparative studies of reproductive behavior. However estrus occurs in other life-history contexts, some of which differ from cycling estrus (CE) in that (a) the female is disposed to behave both maternally and sexually and (b) they result in litter overlap (i.e., the simultaneous gestation and lactation of two litters). ...
متن کاملTowards a uniform nomenclature for ground squirrels: the status of the Holarctic chipmunks
The chipmunks are a Holarctic group of ground squirrels currently allocated to the genus Tamias within the tribe Marmotini (Rodentia: Sciuridae). Cranial, postcranial, and genital morphology, cytogenetics, and genetics each separate them into three distinctive and monophyletic lineages now treated as subgenera. These groups are found in eastern North America, western North America, and Asia, re...
