N Engl J Med 2005;352:373-9. Copyright © 2005 Massachusetts Medical Society. A 47-year-old woman with a history of breast cancer presents with confusion and dehydration. The serum calcium level is 18.0 mg per deciliter (4.5 mmol per liter). She has postural hypotension and low central venous pressure on examination of the jugular veins. The serum phosphorus level is 5.0 mg per deciliter (1.6 mmol per liter), the blood urea nitrogen level is 80.0 mg per deciliter (28.6 mmol per liter), the serum creatinine level is 2.0 mg per deciliter (177 μmol per liter), and the albumin level is 3.3 g per deciliter. A bone scintigraphic scan reveals no evidence of skeletal involvement by the tumor. How should she be treated?

Paraneoplastic hypocalcemia in a patient whit gastric cancer accompanied by osteoblastic metastasis
Paraneoplastic syndromes are generally defined as clinical disorder associated with malignant diseases, and hypocalcemia as paraneoplastic manifestation associated with cancer is a rare condition. In patient with bone metastatic cancer, osteolytic lesions are more common than osteoblastic ones which give rise to hypercalcemia and hypocalcemia is a rare condition in this group of patients. We de...
متن کاملHypercalcemia as a Presenting Clinical Manifestation of Adenocarcinoma of the Colon
Hypercalcemia is rarely associated with colon cancer. It is related to overexpression of parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTH-rp) in malignant cells of the primary colon tumor and metastases. A 44 year old lady presented for evaluation of severe hypercalcemia (15.7 mg/dL) associated with abdominal pain, nausea and constipation. She was diagnosed with metastatic colon cancer involving the li...
متن کاملHypercalcemia in Patients Treated with Oral Bisphosphonates for Tumor-Induced Osteolysis
Results: Hypercalcemia was found in 8.7% respondents starting the treatment with bisphosphonates. The most common cause of malignancy-associated hypercalcemia was prostate cancer, multiple myeloma and breast cancer. On the other hand, hypercalcemia was the most prevalent among patients with multiple myeloma, metastatic cancer of an unknown primary origin and bladder cancer. Metastases were repo...
متن کاملA case of lung cancer with hypercalcemia which was incidentally complicated with primary hyperparathyroidism due to parathyroid adenoma.
In lung cancer patients, hypercalcemia is a fairly common metabolic problem associated with malignancy. However, the occurrence of hypercalcemia in lung cancer patients means an ominous prognostic sign. As hypercalcemia often causes early death, quick diagnosis and treatment for hypercalcemia are required. A 69-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with anorexia caused by hypercalcemia. O...
متن کاملHypercalcemia in Cancer: Association with Malignancy Type and Effect on Mortality
Purpose Hypercalcemia is an electrolyte disorder found in cancer patients which can complicate the disease and hasten death. It is classified by a blood serum calcium level of 2.6 mmol/l and above and its incidence is related to malignancy type. The object of this study is to explore the distribution of hypercalcemia amongst different cancer forms and to record the effects on mortality. The stu...
متن کاملExtensive Visceral Calcification Demonstrated on 99mTc-MDP Bone Scan in Patient with Carcinoma Penis and Hypercalcemia of Malignancy
Hypercalcemia is a common life-threatening complication associated with several malignancies. Parathyroid-related peptide has been shown to cause hypercalcemia in several solid tumors but rarely in penile cancer. We report a case of penile cancer with hypercalcemia causing metastatic visceral calcification in lungs, liver, and stomach detected on bone scan without significant abnormalities on C...
