Food allergy and anaphylaxis – 2053. New diagnostic algorithms that will reduce the need for oral food challenges
نویسندگان
چکیده
Background Diagnosis of food allergy relies on clinical history, tests for allergen specific IgE and oral food challenges. A recent reaction consistent with IgE-mediated symptoms in conjunction with a positive allergen-specific IgE test (either skin prick test (SPT) or serum allergen specific IgE (sIgE)) is usually sufficient to diagnose food allergy. In the absence of a reaction history, a positive skin prick test or serum allergen-specific IgE test may not necessarily indicate clinical allergy and it is often necessary to perform resource-intensive and potentially dangerous oral food challenges. We aimed to develop diagnostic algorithms in infants, using sIgE testing, that will minimize the requirement for food challenges and resource utilization of over burdened allergy services.

Moral Considerations in Pediatric Food Allergies
Food allergies are common health problem among children. They carry a significant risk of severe allergic reactions. These disorders are chronic conditions in which the immune system becomes hypersensitive to some food products. It is estimated that 8% of children under the age of three have a type of food allergy. The common allergenic foods include cow’s milk, wheat, peanuts, egg, soy and fis...

Background Food allergy in children is increasing in prevalence and severity. To parents this may translate to deliberate food restriction especially to either highly allergenic foods or to unknown foods (food neophobia). These claims need to be evaluated by a good clinical history and if warranted, skin prick testing and food specific IgE assays. However neither of these is diagnostic of food ...

Although food allergy is a major public health problem, currently there is no effective and safe treatment except to avoid the foods .But the need for new options is critical now as the number of children diagnosed with food allergies rises. Avoiding the offending allergen in the diet is the primary treatment of food allergy. Once a food to which the patient is sensitive has been identified, th...

Food allergy is a lifelong condition with no known treatment or cure. Allergy tests such as skin tests and blood tests are not always accurate when positive and are not necessarily diagnostic of a food allergy. A food allergy takes into consideration both the history of exposure and the testing. The food challenge is considered the diagnostic gold standard for food allergy. However, recent evid...
