Tensor-guided interpolation of subducting slab depths

چکیده
Earthquakes and seismic surveys provide estimates of depths of subducting slabs, but only at scattered locations. To construct a useful three dimensional model of slab geometry we must interpolate slab depths at uniformly sampled locations on the earth’s surface, and the interpolation method should account for the curvature of that surface. In addition to estimates of depths from earthquake locations, focal mechanisms of subduction zone earthquakes also provide estimates of the strikes and dips of the subducting slab on which they occur. We use estimated strikes to construct a metric tensor field that guides a blended neighbor interpolation of estimated depths. Our interpolation serves as an example of using one set of scattered data to infer the spatial correlation of another, while accounting for the acquisition of those data on a non-planar surface.

Tensor-guided fitting of subducting slab depths
Earthquakes and active-source seismic surveys provide estimates of depths of subducting slabs, but only at scattered locations. Constructing a useful 3D model of slab geometry involves fitting the depth estimates with a uniformly sampled function of space. The method used to fit the data should account for the curvature of the earth’s surface as well as data uncertainties. In addition to estima...
متن کاملCompressive sensing of frequency-dependent seismic radiation from subduction zone megathrust ruptures
Megathrust earthquakes rupture a broad zone of the subducting plate interface in both along-strike and along-dip directions. The along-dip rupture characteristics of megathrust events, e.g., their slip and energy radiation distribution, reflect depth-varying frictional properties of the slab interface. Here, we report high-resolution frequency-dependent seismic radiation of the four largest meg...
متن کاملSub-slab anisotropy beneath the Sumatra and circum-Pacific subduction zones from source-side shear wave splitting observations
Understanding the dynamics of subduction is critical to our overall understanding of plate tectonics and the solid Earth system. Observations of seismic anisotropy can yield constraints on deformation patterns in the mantle surrounding subducting slabs, providing a tool for studying subduction dynamics. While many observations of seismic anisotropy have been made in subduction systems, our unde...
متن کاملSeismic evidence for thermally-controlled dehydration reaction in subducting oceanic crust
[1] We perform travel-time tomography to estimate detailed seismic velocity structures in the crust of the Pacific slab from northeastern (NE) Japan to the Kanto district, Japan, and reveal that the depth extent of the low-velocity (hydrated) oceanic crust varies along the arc. The low-velocity oceanic crust is subducting to depths of 120–150 km beneath Kanto, which is 40–70 km deeper compared ...
متن کاملSeparation of supercritical slab-fluids to form aqueous fluid and melt components in subduction zone magmatism.
Subduction-zone magmatism is triggered by the addition of H(2)O-rich slab-derived components: aqueous fluid, hydrous partial melts, or supercritical fluids from the subducting slab. Geochemical analyses of island arc basalts suggest two slab-derived signatures of a melt and a fluid. These two liquids unite to a supercritical fluid under pressure and temperature conditions beyond a critical endp...
