Contextualism: The World View of Behavior Analysis
نویسندگان
چکیده
The thesis of this paper is that contemporary behavior analysis-and the behavior analysis of child development in particular-is contextualistic in world view, in contrast to its traditional characterization as being mechanistic. The contextualistic character of behavior analysis is introduced by presenting some material on the field’s historical background. This material, though, is not presented in the manner of the standard account, but rather in a revised account with respect to such movements as empiricism, associationism. positivism. operationism. and pragmatism. The thesis is then developed more fully by comparing and contrasting the contextualism of behavior analysis with mechanism. both of which are analyzed with respect to five core developmental issues: (a) elementarism versus holism. (b) development as response-based change versus structural change. (c) causal versus functional analysis, (d) continuity versus discontinuity, and (e) the passive versus active nature of development. Finally. the importance of “context” in contextualism is examined and organized according to current behavior-analytic practices. Concluding commentary focuses on the salutory effects of having both behavior analysis and mainstream developmental psychology be commensurable in world view. especially with regard to such issues as cognition. ~tl IYXX Acadcmlc PlC\\. Contextualism in Behavior Analysis of Development: upon Further Reflection
The notion that contextualism has evolved as an alternative to organismic and mechanistic metamodels or world views of human development has received much attention in psychology during the last few years (e.g, Reese, 1991), In behavior analysis, there has been enormous discussion and debate over the questions of whether behavior analysis is mechanistic or contextualistic (e.g., Marr, 1993a, 19...
متن کاملRecurrent Issues in the Study of Behavior Development: Metamodels
Metamodels, play an important role in shaping theory and research in behavioral development Recently, there has been increasing interest among theorists to explore metamodels of human development. In particular, developmentalists are searching for metamodels about human behavior that can both integrate existing data and generate new information. Such models would help researchers deal with the ...
متن کاملThe role of context in contextualism
Epistemic contextualism holds that the truth conditions of knowledge attributions vary from one context of utterance to another. On this view, different utterances of the same knowledge sentence of the form " S knows that P " convey different propositions in different contexts. What proposition an utterance of " S knows that P " conveys depends on the epistemic standards in place in the context...
متن کاملTim Sundell “contextualism and the Semantic Strategy in Epistemology”
Contextualism in epistemology is the view that on different occasions of utterance, the English verb know expresses different propositional attitudes—attitudes that vary in the required degree or kind of justification. For terminological convenience, I will distinguish between two contextualist theses. First, there is what Iʼll call linguistic contextualism (LC). By linguistic contextualism, I ...

This article examines Vygotskian cultural-historical theory by putting it into dialogue with Stephen Pepper’s root metaphor theory. I focus on Vygotsky’s insistence on the dialectical unity of the phylogenetic and ontogenetic domains in ontogenesis, which he articulated in his account of how the natural-psychological and cultural-psychological lines of development merge with the emergence of sp...
