Tricritical Points in Multicomponent Fluid Mixtures: a Geometric Interpretation”
نویسنده
چکیده
We consider special critical points in multicomponent fluid mixtures, where critical phenomena occur between three phases simultaneously. We show that although such points may be the intersection of three lines of critical points, they are not in general analogous to the tricritical points originally proposed by Gr iffiths. Rather the three lines are part of a single surface of critical points and the special point occurs where the boundary of the surface of critical points is a maximum with respect to a particular variable selected experimentally (usually temperature). We suggest experimental tests to determine whether the boundary is singular at the point, making it also a special point. Finally, we relate the entire discussion to the recently proposed concept of order for critical points and discuss the possibilities of special scaling. * Supported in part by the U. S. Theory and Possible Experiments
Using field-theoretical methods and exploiting conformal invari-ance, we study Casimir forces at tricritical points exerted by long-range fluctuations of the order-parameter field. Special attention is paid to the situation where the symmetry is broken by the boundary conditions (extraordinary transition). Besides the parallel-plate configuration, we also discuss the geometries of two separate ...
متن کاملSimulation of phase transitions in highly asymmetric fluid mixtures.
We present a novel method for the accurate numerical determination of the phase behavior of fluid mixtures having large particle-size asymmetries. By incorporating the recently developed geometric cluster algorithm within a restricted Gibbs ensemble, we are able to probe directly the density and concentration fluctuations that drive phase transitions, but that are inaccessible to conventional s...
متن کاملProposal for the Classification of Critical Points by Order ~
Critical points of complex thermodynamic systems are classified by their order 0, defined here for the first time. A convenient notation is developed for such points. The geometric approach to phase transitions in multicomponent systems [ 11, which was used by Grif-fiths to propose the existence of tricritical points [2], naturally leads one to pose the following question: "In more complex syst...
متن کاملLattice density functional for colloid-polymer mixtures: comparison of two fundamental measure theories.
We consider a binary mixture of colloid and polymer particles with positions on a simple cubic lattice. Colloids exclude both colloids and polymers from nearest neighbor sites. Polymers are treated as effective particles that are mutually noninteracting, but exclude colloids from neighboring sites; this is a discrete version of the (continuum) Asakura-Oosawa-Vrij model. Two alternative density ...
متن کاملWeighted-density approximation for general nonuniform fluid mixtures.
In order to construct a general density-functional theory for nonuniform fluid mixtures, we propose an extension to multicomponent systems of the weighted-density approximation of Curtin and Ashcroft [Phys. Rev. A 32, 2909 (1985)]. This extension corrects a deficiency in a similar extension proposed earlier by Denton and Ashcroft [Phys. Rev. A 42, 7312 (1990)], in that that functional cannot be...
