چکیده
This paper highlights the Thar Desert and its ecosystem. The work reviews and presents the natural condition of the Thar Desert within Rajasthan State. The diversity of the vegetation and of higher animals is discussed on the basis of earlier works and surveys. Major problems and conservation issues are presented along with their possible solutions. Recommendations are made for the protection of this ecosystem.

Biotechnological approaches for propagation and prospecting of important medicinal plants from Indian Thar Desert
The “Thar Desert” region of Rajasthan in north-west India is one of the most inhospitable landscapes on earth. The desert has sparse vegetation and the ground surface is exposed to sun, atmosphere and associated physical forces. Ever increasing human and livestock population have put heavy demands for plant products, resulting in over exploitation of well adapted plants. Plants like species of ...
متن کاملGroundwater recharge in natural dune systems and agricultural ecosystems in the Thar Desert region, Rajasthan, India
Water and nutrient availability for crop production are critical issues in (semi)arid regions. Unsaturated-zone Cl tracer data and nutrient (NO3 and PO4) concentrations were used to quantify recharge rates using the Cl mass balance approach and nutrient availability in the Thar Desert, Rajasthan, India. Soil cores were collected in dune/interdune settings in the arid Thar Desert (near Jaisalmer...
متن کاملCharacterization and phylogenetic analysis of antituberculous compound producing actinomycete strain D25 isolated from Thar Desert soil, Rajasthan
During the course of the anti-infective drug discovery programme, actinomycete strain D25 was recovered from the Thar Desert soil, Rajasthan, India. Actinomycin type of compound isolated from the strain D25 showed promising activity against multi drug resistant and extensively drug resistant M. tuberculosis isolates. The present study reports the characteristics and phylogenetic status of the a...

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES Malaria is the major health problem in western Rajasthan yet its vector fauna and transmission dynamics thereof is not understood properly. The present investigations report complete profile of qualitative and quantitative aspects of anopheline species occurring in different settings of desert ecosystem. METHODS Area with irrigation through canal for more than 20 years...
متن کاملIndigenous and Modern Scientific Strategies for Characterization, Conservation and Sustainable Utilization of Bio-resources of the Indian Thar Desert
The densely populated Indian Thar Desert, which extends from India to Pakistan, is the 18th largest in the world. Diurnal variation in temperature, erratic precipitation, poor soil texture, and saline tracts are serious constraints for the livelihood of humans. The Indian Thar Desert also has significant natural resources that can be harnessed to mitigate constraints and to support life of its ...
