Misorientation texture development during grain growth. Part II: Theory

چکیده

A critical event model for the evolution of numberand area-weighted misorientation distribution functions (MDFs) during grain growth is proposed. Predictions from the model are compared to numberand area-weighted MDFs measured in Monte Carlo simulations with anisotropic interfacial properties and several initial orientation distributions, as well as a dense polycrystalline magnesia sample. The steady-state equation of our model appears to be a good fit to all data. The relation between the grain boundary energy and the normalized average boundary area is discussed in the context of triple junction dynamics. ! 2009 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Misorientation texture development during grain growth. Part I: Simulation and experiment

Grain growth in two and three dimensions with anisotropic interfacial properties was simulated using the Monte Carlo method. The relative effects of grain boundary energy and mobility anisotropy on numberand area-weighted misorientation distribution functions (MDFs) were compared. Results indicate that energy anisotropy has a measurable effect on misorientation texture development, while mobili...

Abnormal Grain Growth and Texture Development

A theory for abnormal grain growth (AGG) in polycrystalline materials is revisited and extended in order to predict AGG in textured polycrystals. The motivation for the work is to improve our understanding of the origins of the Goss texture component, {110}<001>, during annealing of Fe-Si sheet. Since the AGG phenomenon in grain-oriented electrical steels is known to be dependent on the presenc...

Grain boundary character evolution during grain growth in a Zr alloy

Grain boundary character in samples of Zr701 annealed at two different temperatures has been investigated in terms of lattice misorientation. The main difference between the two samples was the extent of grain growth post-recrystallization. The textures were typical for the material. Differences between the texture-based misorientation distribution function (T-MDF) and the microstructure-based ...

On abnormal subgrain growth and the origin of recrystallization nuclei

Abnormal subgrain growth has been proposed as the nucleation mechanism for recrystallization. To test this hypothesis, Monte Carlo Potts model simulations of subgrain growth were performed on single-phase, strain-free subgrain structures with experimentally validated microstructure, texture, boundary character, and boundary properties. Results indicate that abnormal growth events emerge spontan...

Grain boundary studies of high-temperature superconducting materials using electron backscatter Kikuchi diffraction

Grain orientation and grain boundary misorientation distributions in high critical current density, high-temperature superconductors were determined using electron backscatter Kikuchi diffraction. It is found that depending on the type of superconductor and the processing method used to fabricate it, there exist different scales of biaxial texture from no biaxial texture, local biaxial texture,...
