Excess factor VIII: a common cause of hypercoagulability.

چکیده

BACKGROUND Elevations of coagulation factor VIII have recently been described in significant numbers of patients with venous thromboembolism (VTE) previously thought to have had an "idiopathic" event. Three patients from a family practice are presented with recurrent VTE and increased factor VIII levels. METHOD The case histories and results of laboratory tests were reviewed. RESULTS The 3 patients had no other clear coagulopathy. In 2 of the 3, the increase was confirmed with a second reading. CONCLUSIONS Factor VIII assay should be considered in the work-up of idiopathic, recurrent VTE. Long-term anticoagulation may be appropriate in this setting.

Combined Factor V and VIII Deficiency

This review summarizes current data on the pathomechanisms and new genetic findings of combined factor V and VIII deficiency (CF5F8D). Congenital haemorrhagic disorders characterized by deficiency of two clotting factors comprise an interesting group. Among dual coagulation disorders, CF5F8D is the most common type. For the first time combined factor V and VIII deficiency (F5F8D) was reported b...

Thyrotoxicosis and cerebral venous sinus thrombosis, causality or chance alone?

Cerebral sinus venous thrombosis is an uncommon cause of stroke. Three factors usually predispose to venous thrombosis: hypercoagulability states, venous stasis, and blood vessel wall changes.1--3 In patients with thyrotoxicosis, the increased activity of factor VIII,4 amongst others, results in a hypercoagulability state and has been reported as being a factor which predisposes to cerebral sin...

FACTOR V AND VIII INHIBITOR IN PATIENTS WITH COMBINED FACTOR V AND VIII DEFICIENCY

Patients with coagulation factor(s) deficiency who use coagulation therapy are susceptible to forming inhibitors against coagulation factor(s). In this survey we detected factor V and VIII inhibitor in ten patients with combined deficiency of factors V and VIII from north east of Iran (Khorassan province). It was revealed in our survey that eight patients had both factor V and factor VIII i...

Detection of Factor VIII Inhibitors in Hemophilia A Patients

Background: Factor VIII administration to hemophilia A patients results in an immune response (inhibitor formation) which significantly complicates the therapy. The present study was performed to determine the prevalence of inhibitor development in hemophilia A patients receiving recombinant factor VIII therapy. Materials and Methods: This was an observational descriptive study. Clotting fac...
