Search for 1.809 MeV Emission of Al from nearby Supernova Remnants using COMPTEL
نویسندگان
چکیده
We report the negative results of our searches in COMPTEL data for 1.809 MeV gamma-ray line emission from four localized regions which contain nearby supernova remnants (SNRs). The upper flux limits (2σ) are found to be in the range of 1.4×10 to 2.4×10 photons s cm. These upper limits do not severely constrain the theoretical Al yields from individual core collapse supernovae due to large uncertainties in the SNR distances and the nature of the progenitor stars.

The origin of the long-lived (1.07 Myr mean life) radioactive 26 Al, which has been observed in the Galactic interstellar medium from its 1.809 MeV decay gamma-ray line emission, has been a persistent problem for over twenty years. Wolf-Rayet (WR) winds were thought to be the most promising source, but their calculated 26 Al yields are not consistent with recent analyses of the 1.809 MeV emissi...
متن کاملA multiwavelength comparison of COMPTEL 1.8 MeV 26Al line data
We search for correlations between 1.809 MeV γ-ray line emission, attributed to the radioactive decay of 26Al, and intensity distributions observed at other wavelengths by confronting CGRO COMPTEL 1.8 MeV data with an extended database of all-sky maps. The database contains 31 all-sky maps, covering the entire explored wavelength range from the radio band up to high-energy gamma-rays. Different...
متن کاملThe Cygnus X Region: a Nucleosynthesis Laboratory for Integral
The detection of 1.809 MeV gamma-ray line emission from the Cygnus X complex by the COMPTEL telescope is one of the most convincing proves of massive star nucleosynthesis in our Galaxy. The Cygnus X complex is an extremely active nearby region, containing several star forming regions, OB associations and young open star clusters. It houses some of the most massive stars known in our Galaxy and ...
متن کاملImage reconstruction of COMPTEL 1.8 MeV 26Al line data
We present a new algorithm, called Multiresolution Regularized Expectation Maximization (MREM), for the reconstruction of γ-ray intensity maps from COMPTEL data. The algorithm is based on the iterative Richardson-Lucy scheme to which we added a wavelet thresholding step in order to eliminate image-noise in the reconstruction. The wavelet thresholding explicitly accounts for spatial correlations...

Because of its short lifetime, radioactive 44Ti is a probe of the supernova activity of the Galaxy during the last few centuries. The COMPTEL experiment aboard the Compton Observatory is capable of imaging sources of 44Ti line emission at 1.157MeV with a sensitivity of about 2 10−5 γ cm−2 s−1. The latest known supernova remnant in the Milky Way, Cassiopeia A, has already been detected by COMPTE...
