چکیده

We describe a technique for solving for the orbital elements of multiple planets from radial velocity (RV) and/or astrometric data taken with 1 m/s and μas precision, appropriate for efforts to detect Earth-massed planets in their stars’ habitable zones, such as NASA’s proposed Space Interferometry Mission. We include details of calculating analytic derivatives for use in the Levenberg-Marquardt (LM) algorithm for the problems of fitting RV and astrometric data separately and jointly. We also explicate the general method of separating the linear and nonlinear components of a model fit in the context of an LM fit, show how explicit derivatives can be calculated in such a model, and demonstrate the speed up and convergence improvements of such a scheme in the case of a five-planet fit to published radial velocity data for 55 Cnc. The architecture of the GJ 876 planetary system Masses and orbital coplanarity for planets b and c ⋆

We present a combined analysis of previously published high-precision radial velocities and astrometry for the GJ 876 planetary system using a self-consistent model that accounts for the planet-planet interactions. Assuming the three planets so far identified in the system are coplanar, we find that including the astrometry in the analysis does not result in a best-fit inclination significantly...

Short-Term Dynamical Interactions Among Extrasolar Planets

We show that short-term perturbations among massive planets in multiple planet systems can result in radial velocity variations of the central star which differ substantially from velocity variations derived assuming the planets are executing independent Keplerian motions. We discuss two fitting methods which can lead to an improved dynamical description of multiple planet systems. In the first...

On the Completeness of Reflex Astrometry on Extrasolar Planets near the Sensitivity Limit

We provide a preliminary estimate of the performance of reflex astrometry on Earth-like planets in the habitable zones of nearby stars. In Monte Carlo experiments, we analyze large samples of astrometric data sets with low to moderate signal-to-noise ratios. We use periodograms for discovery and least-squares fits for estimating the Keplerian parameters. We find a completeness for detection in ...

On the Eccentricity Distribution of Exoplanets from Radial Velocity Surveys

We investigate the estimation of orbital parameters by least-χ2 Keplerian fits to radial velocity (RV) data using synthetic data sets. We find that while the fitted period is fairly accurate, the best-fit eccentricity and Mp sin i are systematically biased upward from the true values for low signal-to-noise ratio K/σ . 3 and moderate number of observations Nobs . 60, leading to a suppression of...

New Solutions for the Planetary Dynamics in HD160691 using a Newtonian Model and Latest Data

In this letter we present several new three and four-planet solutions based on the most current available radial velocity data for HD160691 (μAra). These solutions are optimised using the Planetary Orbit Fitting Process (POFP) which is programmed and executed in MATLAB. POFP is based on a full integration of the system’s multiple-body Newtonian equations of motion and on a multi level optimisat...
