Kinetic dissipation and anisotropic heating in a turbulent collisionless plasma
نویسندگان
چکیده
The kinetic evolution of the Orszag–Tang vortex is studied using collisionless hybrid simulations. In magnetohydrodynamics MHD this configuration leads rapidly to broadband turbulence. At large length scales, the evolution of the hybrid simulations is very similar to MHD, with magnetic power spectra displaying scaling similar to a Kolmogorov scaling of 5/3. At small scales, differences from MHD arise, as energy dissipates into heat almost exclusively through the magnetic field. The magnetic energy spectrum of the hybrid simulation shows a break where linear theory predicts that the Hall term in Ohm’s law becomes significant, leading to dispersive kinetic Alfvén waves. A key result is that protons are heated preferentially in the plane perpendicular to the mean magnetic field, creating a proton temperature anisotropy of the type observed in the corona and solar wind. © 2009 American Institute of Physics. Alfvénic Turbulence in the Extended Solar Corona: Kinetic Effects and Proton Heating
We present a model of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence in the extended solar corona that contains the effects of collisionless dissipation and anisotropic particle heating. Recent observations have shown that preferential heating and acceleration of positive ions occur in the first few solar radii of the high-speed solar wind. Measurements made by the Ultraviolet Coronagraph Spectrometer ab...
متن کاملA Model of Turbulence in Magnetized Plasmas: Implications for the Dissipation Range in the Solar Wind
This paper studies the turbulent cascade of magnetic energy in weakly collisional magnetized plasmas. A cascade model is presented, based on the assumptions of local nonlinear energy transfer in wavenumber space, critical balance between linear propagation and nonlinear interaction times, and the applicability of linear dissipation rates for the nonlinearly turbulent plasma. The model follows t...
متن کاملDissipation and heating in solar wind turbulence: from the macro to the micro and back again.
The past decade has seen a flurry of research activity focused on discerning the physics of kinetic scale turbulence in high-speed astrophysical plasma flows. By 'kinetic' we mean spatial scales on the order of or, in particular, smaller than the ion inertial length or the ion gyro-radius--the spatial scales at which the ion and electron bulk velocities decouple and considerable change can be s...
متن کاملKinetic and Fluid Turbulent Cascades in Magnetized Weakly Collisional Astrophysical Plasmas
This paper presents a theoretical framework for understanding plasma turbulence in astrophysical plasmas. It is motivated by observations of electromagnetic and density fluctuations in the solar wind, interstellar medium and galaxy clusters, as well as by models of particle heating in accretion disks. All of these plasmas and many others have turbulent motions at weakly collisional and collisio...
متن کاملSpectral Cascade and Energy Dissipation in Kinetic Alfvén Wave Turbulence
Spectral cascade and energy dissipation of Alfven turbulence is studied using a massively parallel gyrokinetic particle simulation. The simulation observes a magnetic energy spectrum with a power law index of ”-5/3” in the long wavelength, which agrees with magnetohydrodynamic results in the inertial range. In the dissipation range, the simulation finds a spectral break point on the ion gyrorad...
