The Determination of Total Mercury in Fish and Agricultural Plant Materials Using Thermal Decomposition and Amalgamation Coupled with Atomic Absorption

چکیده
Mercury has long been recognized as a serious global pollutant that has a significant impact upon our ecosystem. Unlike most other pollutants, it is highly mobile, non-biodegradable, and bio-accumulative and as a result has to be closely monitored to ensure its harmful effects on local populations are minimized. Approximately 50 tons of mercury particulates are emitted into the atmosphere every year by a variety of different man-made and natural sources including coal-fired power plants, solid waste incineration plants, volcanoes and forest fires. When the mercury falls back to earth it is deposited on the land and gets into the soil, river sediments and water ecosystems, where it is converted into the highly toxic organo mercury compound, methyl mercury (CH3Hg). This toxicant enters both the plant and aquatic system food chain, and eventually ends up in the crops, vegetables and seafood we consume.

Determining Total Mercury in Samples from the Persian Gulf and theCaspian Sea: Comparison of Dry Ash and Wet Extraction Mothods
Monitoring of mercury in environmental samples, with its proven toxicity on the food chain, requires sensitive and accurate analytical techniques. In this study, two methods for identification and quantification of total mercury in biological and sediment samples are compared: i) dry ash preparation and subsequent established procedures for Combustion Atomic Absorption Spectrometry, (AMA 254) ...
متن کاملDirect mercury analysis in environmental solids by ICP-MS with on-line sample ashing and mercury pre-concentration using a direct mercury analyzer
A commercially available direct mercury analyzer (DMA) based on sample combustion, pre-concentration by amalgamation with gold, and atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS) was coupled to a sector field inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS). The combined system (DMA-ICP-MS) was optimized and evaluated for the determination of mercury in environmental samples using both external...
متن کاملDetermination of Mercury in an Assortment of Dietary Supplements Using an Inexpensive Combustion Atomic Absorption Spectrometry Technique
The concentrations of mercury in forty, commercially available dietary supplements, were determined using a new, inexpensive analysis technique. The method involves thermal decomposition, amalgamation, and detection of mercury by atomic absorption spectrometry with an analysis time of approximately six minutes per sample. The primary cost savings from this approach is that labor-intensive sampl...
متن کاملRobust ultrasound assisted extraction approach using dilute TMAH solutions for the speciation of mercury in fish and plant materials by cold vapour atomic absorption spectrometry (CVAAS)
A simple and rapid ultrasound assisted extraction (UAE) protocol with dilute solutions of tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) for the speciation of mercury in fish and plant tissues was developed as an alternative to conventional methods which require intensive treatments. The main operational parameters, such as extractant concentration (TMAH), sonication time and amount of sample, were optim...
متن کاملDetermination of Organic Mercury in Biota, Plants and Contaminated Sediments Using a Thermal Atomic Absorption Spectrometry Technique
A simple, rapid procedure for the determination of organic mercury in sediments, plants and fish tissues has been developed and validated. Extraction and separation of organic mercury compounds from the sample matrix was achieved by an established procedure based on an acid leaching of the sample (H2SO4/KBr/CuSO4), followed by extraction of the organic mercury halide with toluene and back-extra...
