Cult of Violence

چکیده

Violence is now becoming a way of life to deal with political, economic and social issues. Ever since independence, the agitational methods employed during the days of our struggle for freedom have continued to be applied even against our own Government. With the passage of time bitterness, violence, disrespect for authority and tendency towards mob rule have been growing. Non-violence and the spirit of'satya-graha' are becoming conspicuous by their absence. Much of the violence has often resulted in the derailment of trains, stoppage of work, killings and attacks on innocent people, looting of banks and public property. Incidents in few states of the country are some of the burning examples of such violence during the past few months which have been highlighted in our national dailies. Not only in the political field but also in religious fields, it has taken a heavy toll. Students' and industrial strikes have been associated with rampant violence at several places though not to such a large extent as due to political and communal reasons. Violence in the form of terrorism has engulfed all societies. Being behavioural scientists people often turn to us for comments over such acts of aggression, though it is more of a social rather than a psychological problem. One should wonder though as to why does such violence occur ? Is it a biological necessity ? Psychoanalytical theorists see it is as a natural instinct. A critical view of several types and acts of violence would indicate that violent acts may result in gratification of emotional needs, power and control over others, acquiring territory and wealth, and relief from oppression or threat of oppression. People may indulge in violence to achieve or maintain freedom and human rights. Individuals or groups experiencing themselves as more oppressed than others may adopt the path ol violence. Jawahar Lai Nehru once commented that misery and want lead to violence. Nations may be held in greater esteem when they take violent action. Military officers have often argued that men would become lazy, complacent and physically weak it there are no wars. Wars cultivate the virtues of heroism, patriotism, bravery and courage. It develops the noblest virtues of man, teaches duty to a nation and sell sacrifice at die risk of life. So much in favour of violence. Is this violence really beneficial ?
