Elastin-based Biopolymers for Biomedical and Biotechnological Applications
نویسنده
چکیده
Perhaps the most appealing opportunity is represented by gaining inspiration from nature for the precise tailoring of biomaterials with finely tuned unique functional properties. A very promising model is represented by Human Elastin-Like Polypeptides (HELP), repetitive artificial polypeptides based on pentaor hexapeptidic motifs that characterize elastin. These protein polymers retain several peculiar biophysical properties as, the reversible inverse phase transition, changing the solubility and aggregation state in response to temperature variation. The smart nature of this class of compounds makes them attractive for many applications in the biomedical and biotechnological fields, in particular for biomaterial development. The Trans2Care project aiming to translating scientific and technological expertise into products for the biomedical field represents an exciting and challenging environment to best exploit the potential these biomimetic macromolecules. Elastin-like polypeptides as a promising family of genetically-engineered protein based polymers
Elastin-like polypeptides (ELP) are artificial, genetically encodable biopolymers, belonging to elastomeric proteins, which are widespread in a wide range of living organisms. They are composed of a repeating pentapeptide sequence Val-Pro-Gly-Xaa-Gly, where the guest residue (Xaa) can be any naturally occurring amino acid except proline. These polymers undergo reversible phase transition that c...
متن کاملTransformation of amyloid-like fibers, formed from an elastin-based biopolymer, into a hydrogel: an X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy study.
Previous studies have revealed the propensity of elastin-based biopolymers to form amyloid-like fibers when dissolved in water. These are of interest when considered as "ancestral units" of elastin in which they represent the simplest sequences in the hydrophobic regions of the general type XxxGlyGlyZzzGly (Xxx, Zzz = Val, Leu). We normally refer to these biopolymers based on elastin or related...

BACKGROUND Spider silk is a tear-resistant and elastic biopolymer that has outstanding mechanical properties. Additionally, exiguous immunogenicity is anticipated for spider silks. Therefore, spider silk represents a potential ideal biomaterial for medical applications. All known spider silk proteins, so-called spidroins, reveal a composite nature of silk-specific units, allowing the recombinan...

With the remarkable increase in the fields of biomedical engineering and regenerative medicine, biomaterial design has become an indispensable approach for developing the biocompatible carriers for drug or gene cargo and extracellular matrix (ECM) for cell survival, proliferation and differentiation. Native ECM materials derived from animal tissues were believed to be the best choices for tissu...
متن کاملA biotechnological perspective on the application of iron oxide magnetic colloids modified with polysaccharides.
Iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) alone are suitable for a broad spectrum of applications, but the low stability and heterogeneous size distribution in aqueous medium represent major setbacks. These setbacks can however be reduced or diminished through the coating of MNPs with various polymers, especially biopolymers such as polysaccharides. Polysaccharides are biocompatible, non-toxic a...
