چکیده

Quantification of adipose tissue (fat) from computed tomography (CT) scans is conducted mostly through manual or semi-automated image segmentation algorithms with limited efficacy. In this work, we propose a completely unsupervised and automatic method to identify adipose tissue, and then separate Subcutaneous Adipose Tissue (SAT) from Visceral Adipose Tissue (VAT) at the abdominal region. We offer a threephase pipeline consisting of (1) Initial boundary estimation using gradient points, (2) boundary refinement using Geometric Median Absolute Deviation and Appearance based Local Outlier Scores (3) Context driven label fusion using Conditional Random Fields (CRF) to obtain the final boundary between SAT and VAT. We evaluate the proposed method on 151 abdominal CT scans and obtain state-of-the-art 94% and 91% dice similarity scores for SAT and VAT segmentation, as well as significant reduction in fat quantification error measure.

Development of Automatic Visceral Fat Volume Calculation Software for CT Volume Data

OBJECTIVE To develop automatic visceral fat volume calculation software for computed tomography (CT) volume data and to evaluate its feasibility. METHODS A total of 24 sets of whole-body CT volume data and anthropometric measurements were obtained, with three sets for each of four BMI categories (under 20, 20 to 25, 25 to 30, and over 30) in both sexes. True visceral fat volumes were defined ...

A Method for Body Fat Composition Analysis in Abdominal Magnetic Resonance Images Via Self-Organizing Map Neural Network

Introduction: The present study aimed to suggest an unsupervised method for the segmentation of visceral adipose tissue (VAT) and subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) in axial magnetic resonance (MR) images of the abdomen. Materials and Methods: A self-organizing map (SOM) neural network was designed to segment the adipose tissue from other tissues in the MR images. The segmentation of SAT and VA...

Background & Aims: Physical activity by modulating angiogenesis in adipose tissue, effects on the entire body metabolic profile. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of 12 weeks of moderate intensity continuous training on VEGF, PEDF and PAI-1 of visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissue in obese rats. Materials & Methods: 15 male Wistar rats were divided into 2 groups...

Applying a computer-aided scheme to detect a new radiographic image marker for prediction of chemotherapy outcome

BACKGROUND To investigate the feasibility of automated segmentation of visceral and subcutaneous fat areas from computed tomography (CT) images of ovarian cancer patients and applying the computed adiposity-related image features to predict chemotherapy outcome. METHODS A computerized image processing scheme was developed to segment visceral and subcutaneous fat areas, and compute adiposity-r...

Computed tomographic evaluation of abdominal fat in minipigs

Computed tomography (CT) exams were conducted to determine the distribution of abdominal fat identified based on the CT number measured in Hounsfield Units (HU) and to measure the volume of the abdominal visceral and subcutaneous fat in minipigs. The relationship between the CT-based fat volumes of several vertebral levels and the entire abdomen and anthropometric data including the sagittal ab...
