چکیده

Cross-field particle transport in the scrape-off layer ~SOL! of Alcator C-Mod @Phys. Plasmas 1, 1511 ~1994!# can be characterized by an effective particle diffusivity (Deff) that increases markedly with distance from the separatrix. As a consequence, recycling onto the main-chamber walls is large compared to plasma flows into the divertor volume. The SOL exhibits a two-layer structure: Steep gradients and moderate fluctuation levels are typically found in a ;5 mm region near the separatrix ~near SOL! where parallel electron conduction typically dominates energy losses. Small gradients and larger fluctuation levels with longer correlation times are found outside this region ~far SOL!. Deff in the near SOL increases strongly with local plasma collisionality normalized to the magnetic connection length. As the discharge density limit is approached, Deff and associated fluctuation levels become large across the entire SOL and cross-field heat convection everywhere exceeds parallel conduction losses, impacting the power balance of the discharge. © 2001 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1352596#

The Scrape - Off - Layer in Alcator C - Mod – Transport , Turbulence , and Flows

Research on the scrape-off-layer plasma of the Alcator C-Mod Tokamak is reviewed. The research has focused on understanding the transport of energy and particles both parallel and perpendicular to the magnetic field. Large differences between the inboard, high-field side scrape-off-layer and the outboard, low-field side are found. On the outboard side large levels of anomalous cross-field trans...

PSFC / JA - 05 - 46 Advances in measurement and modeling of the high - confinement - mode pedestal on the Alcator C - Mod tokamak

Edge transport barrier (ETB) studies on the Alcator C-Mod tokamak [Phys. Plasmas 1, 1511, (1994)] investigate pedestal scalings and radial transport of plasma and neutrals. Pedestal profiles show trends with plasma operational parameters such as total current IP . A ballooning-like I2 P dependence is seen in the pressure gradient, despite calculated stability to ideal ballooning modes. A simila...

Edge profile stiffness and insensitivity of the density pedestal to neutral fueling in Alcator C-Mod edge transport barriers

Mechanisms determining the structure of edge temperature and density pedestals, which are associated with edge transport barrier (ETB) formation in tokamaks, are investigated on Alcator C-Mod. Experiments suggest a strong role for critical gradient behavior in setting profile characteristics of edge plasma. The maximum pressure gradient scales as the square of plasma current in both H-modes wit...

Cross-field plasma transport and main chamber recycling in diverted plasmas on Alcator C-Mod

Cross-field particle transport increases sharply with distance into the scrape-off layer and plays a dominant role in the ‘main-chamber recycling’ regime in Alcator C-Mod, a regime where most of the plasma particle efflux recycles on the main-chamber walls rather than flows into the divertor volume. This observation has potentially important implications for a reactor: Contrary to the ideal pic...

Magnetic topology effects on Alcator C-Mod scrape-off layer flow

Recent interest in the experimental study of tokamak plasma flow for different magnetic field geometries calls for theoretical understanding of the effects of tokamak magnetic topology changes on the flow. The consequences of total magnetic field reversal and/or X-point reversal on divergence-free plasma flow within magnetic flux surfaces is considered and the results are applied to interpret r...
