Temporal Observations of Surface Soil Moisture Using A Passive Microwave Sensor
نویسنده
چکیده
A series of 10 aircraft flights was conducted over agricultural fields to evaluate relationships between observed surface soil moisture and soft moisture predicted using passive microwave sensor observations. An a pr/or/ approach was used to predict values of surface soil moisture for three types of fields: tilled corn, no-till corn with soybean stubble, and idle fields with corn stubble. Acceptable predictions were obtained for the tilled corn fields, while poor results were obtained for the others. The source of error is suspected to be the density and orientation of the surface stubble layer; however, further research is needed to verify this explanation. Temporal comparisons between observed, microwave predicted, and soil water-simulated moisture values showed similar patterns for tilled well-drained fields. Divergences between the observed and simulated measurements were apparent on poorly drained fields. This result may be of value in locating and mapping hydrologic contributing areas.

Assimilating remote sensing data in a surface flux–soil moisture model
A key state variable in land surface–atmosphere interactions is soil moisture, which affects surface energy fluxes, runoff and the radiation balance. Soil moisture modelling relies on parameter estimates that are inadequately measured at the necessarily fine model scales. Hence, model soil moisture estimates are imperfect and often drift away from reality through simulation time. Because of its...
متن کاملThe impact of land surface temperature on soil moisture anomaly detection from passive microwave observations
For several years passive microwave observations have been used to retrieve soil moisture from the Earth’s surface. Low frequency observations have the most sensitivity to soil moisture, therefore the current Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) and future Soil Moisture Active and Passive (SMAP) satellite missions observe the Earth’s surface in the L-band frequency. In the past, several sate...
متن کاملRetrieval of soil surface roughness from active and passive microwave observations
Spatial and temporal variation in soil moisture plays a significant role in establishing efficient irrigation scheduling, climate change prediction, and sustainable land and water management. Passive microwave remote sensing at L-band is widely recognised as the preferred technique to measure surface soil moisture globally, with spatial resolution ranging from 40-100km. However, passive microwa...

Remote sensing of soil moisture is a powerful and inexpensive way to map surface soil moisture for a range of applications, including weather prediction, water resources management and irrigation practices. Passive microwave sensors operating at L-band wavelength have shown the most potential for this task. However, this technology faces some major challenges, mostly related to correct interpre...
متن کاملThe Effect of Dew on the X–band Terrestrial Brightness Temperature During SMEX05
Soil moisture is an important yet unobserved reservoir of the hydrologic cycle linked to the spatial and temporal variability of precipitation [1]. The brightness temperature of the land surface at microwave wavelengths is sensitive to soil moisture. Terrestrial brightness temperature also depends on the temperature of the soil and vegetation canopy as well as other canopy and soil properties [...
