چکیده

In order to recognize plant species from their shapes, shapes of contours of leaves can be used. However, contours of leaves are complicated and have variations. In order to deal with the complexities and variations of contours of leaves, a hierarchical representation of leaves is presented in this paper. First, global structures and shapes of leaves are represented by polygons whose vertices are critical points of curvature of smoothed contours of leaves. Second, detailed shapes of mid-most pieces are represented by linear approximation of the contours of pieces. Last, teeth on the contour of leaves are represented by triangles. Such triangles are detected from contours tha t are not smoothed enough to remove teeth. Features a t each hierarchy are represented statistically. Such a hierarchical representation is more powerful than previous methods that represent only global structures of leaves.

Leaf area estimation by a simple and non-destructive method

In this study, the relation between leaf area and its dimensions was estimated using a non-destructive method. This method is based on this fact that the leaf shape does not change during the growing season. In this method, leaf area during the growing season is estimated based on the dimensions of the smallest leaf in the initial stage of plant growth or at any growth stage by measuring the le...

Transactions of the Institute of Measurement and Control

In this paper, an efficient computer-aided plant species identification (CAPSI) approach is proposed, which is based on plant leaf images using a shape matching technique. Firstly, a Douglas Á Peucker approximation algorithm is adopted to the original leaf shapes and a new shape representation is used to form the sequence of invariant attributes. Then a modified dynamic programming (MDP) algori...

Secondary succession after wildfire usually leads to vegetation types that can differ with the original vegetation in terms of forage productivity and community stability. Plant functional types (PFTs) can be used as ecological indices for assessing effects of disturbances on the natural plant communities. Accordingly, this research was aimed to identify, classify and analyze PFTs in three rang...

Jaccard distance based weighted sparse representation for coarse-to-fine plant species recognition

Leaf based plant species recognition plays an important role in ecological protection, however its application to large and modern leaf databases has been a long-standing obstacle due to the computational cost and feasibility. Recognizing such limitations, we propose a Jaccard distance based sparse representation (JDSR) method which adopts a two-stage, coarse to fine strategy for plant species ...
