Competing motivations and emergence: explaining implicational hierarchies
نویسنده
چکیده
It is the basic tenet of the functional approach to typology that at least some linguistic universals may be explained by appealing to features of language use. But the mechanics of the mapping between function and distribution are seldom made explicit. In this paper, a theory of linguistic adaptation is set out in which universals are treated as phenomena of the third kind in Keller’s (1994) terms, i.e. objects which are the result of human actions but not the goal of their intentions. In this view universals emerge at a global level from the interactions of individuals whose actions locally can be described in terms of functional motivations. Computational models of this process (an invisible hand process) can be set up to see what universals emerge with different functional pressures in place. Using this model, Keenan and Comrie’s accessibility hierarchy is shown to emerge when competing functional pressures relating to structural complexity and morphological complexity are taken into account. This is contrasted with claims that structural complexity asymmetries alone can explain implicational universals. The value of this approach is further demonstrated by testing the predicted skewing in the distribution of ‘case-coding’ strategies down the hierarchy.

متن کاملDescriptive scales versus comparative scales
In this paper, I show that scales (or hierarchies) have been appealed to in various functions: They have been used to formulate descriptive generalizations (on a single language), and to formulate cross-linguistic generalizations. They have also been used for binary relations, and for implicational relations among more than two items on the scale. This yields four uses of scales (descriptive re...
متن کاملResultative Markedness and Implicational Hierarchies
This is because the former are lexically implicated or entailed, and thus are more available and less expensive than the latter in the sense that they involve less practical reasoning. In addition, in terms of the strong-weak distinction, an implicational universal can be posited, namely that if a language has strong resultatives, it must have weak resultatives as well (Washio 1999, 2002). Seco...
متن کاملA model for employer’s decision for recruitment
This paper presents a theoretical and empirical analysis of this decision and how it relates to wage setting and the provision of general training. The theoretical framework is a promotion tournament involving M competing firms with heterogeneous productivities, two-level job hierarchies, and a fixed number of managerial positions. This paper also considers an alternative model based on variati...
متن کاملImplicational Scaling of Reading Comprehension Construct: Is it Deterministic or Probabilistic?
In English as a Second Language Teaching and Testing situations, it is common to infer about learners’ reading ability based on his or her total score on a reading test. This assumes the unidimensional and reproducible nature of reading items. However, few researches have been conducted to probe the issue through psychometric analyses. In the present study, the IELTS exemplar module C (1994) wa...
