چکیده

Here, we and others describe an unusual neurorobotic project, a merging of art and science called MEART, the semi-living artist. We built a pneumatically actuated robotic arm to create drawings, as controlled by a living network of neurons from rat cortex grown on a multi-electrode array (MEA). Such embodied cultured networks formed a real-time closed-loop system which could now behave and receive electrical stimulation as feedback on its behavior. We used MEART and simulated embodiments, or animats, to study the network mechanisms that produce adaptive, goal-directed behavior. This approach to neural interfacing will help instruct the design of other hybrid neural-robotic systems we call hybrots. The interfacing technologies and algorithms developed have potential applications in responsive deep brain stimulation systems and for motor prosthetics using sensory components. In a broader context, MEART educates the public about neuroscience, neural interfaces, and robotics. It has paved the way for critical discussions on the future of bio-art and of biotechnology.

A Comparative Study on the Epistemology of Art in Iran and Europe Emphasizing the Social Position of the Artist

The position of the artist in different periods of history has undergone fundamental changes due to the difference in the concept of art and the relationship between art and wisdom: From the creative idea of creation, which placed the creator in the position of the first artist, to the era of the rule of the philosophy of religion or theology, in which the artist, as a craftsman, was merely the...

Oriented Particle Spray: Probabilistic Contour Tracing with Directional Information

Contour following is a standard activity in rotoscoping in the digital post production domain. An artist might need to cut out or edit an object separately from its background and it is left to the artist to manually create the cut out. Techniques for automatically tracing the edges of the object exist, but these operate with heavy manual intervention. The most recent technique called JetStream...

Identifying the patient in George W Lambert's Chesham Street

This paper takes as its focus one of the Edwardian period's most dramatic and little-understood paintings of a medical examination: George Washington Lambert's Chesham Street (1910). The painting shows an upper-class male patient lifting his shirt to reveal a muscular torso for examination by the doctor in the scene and the viewers outside it. The subject of a medical examination, I argue, legi...

Generative art for all

Background: Generative art is created by a system that operates autonomously, or semi-autonomously, rather than directly by the artist. The artist creates the system and establishes parameters that affect the outcome, but the outcome itself emerges from the system rather than from the artist. Generative art systems are frequently computer programs, although biological, social, or other systems ...
