Three‐dimensional Moho topography in Italy: New constraints from receiver functions and controlled source seismology

چکیده
[1] In complex tectonics regions, seismological, geophysical, and geodynamic modeling require accurate definition of the Moho geometry. Various active and passive seismic experiments performed in the central Mediterranean region revealed local information on the Moho depth, in some cases used to produce interpolated maps. In this paper, we present a new and original map of the 3‐D Moho geometry obtained by integrating selected high‐quality controlled source seismic and teleseismic receiver function data. The very small cell size makes the retrieved model suitable for detailed regional studies, crustal corrections in teleseismic tomography, advanced 3‐D ray tracing in regional earthquake location, and local earthquake tomography. Our results show the geometry of three different Moho interfaces: the European, Adriatic‐ Ionian, and Tyrrhenian. The three distinct Moho are fashioned following the Alpine and Apennines subduction, collision, and back‐arc spreading and show medium‐ to high‐frequency topographic undulations reflecting the complexity of the geodynamic evolution.

Thickness of Crust in the West of Iran Obtained from Modeling of Ps Converted Waves
Receiver functions are usually used to detect Ps converted waves and are especially useful to picture seismic discontinuities in the crust and upper mantle. In this study, the P receiver function technique beneath the west Iran is used to map out the lateral variation of the Moho boundary. The teleseismic data (Mb ≥5.5, epicentral distance between 30˚-95˚) recorded from 2004 to 2016 at 17 perma...

[1] We estimate crustal structure and thickness of South America north of roughly 40°S. To this end, we analyzed receiver functions from 20 relatively new temporary broadband seismic stations deployed across eastern Brazil. In the analysis we include teleseismic and some regional events, particularly for stations that recorded few suitable earthquakes. We first estimate crustal thickness and av...
متن کاملThree-dimensional interface modelling with two-dimensional seismic data: the Alpine crust–mantle boundary
We present a new approach to determine the 3-D topography and lateral continuity of seismic interfaces using 2-D-derived controlled-source seismic reflector data. The aim of the approach is to give the simplest possible structure consistent with all reflector data and error estimates. We define simplicity of seismic interfaces by the degree of interface continuity (i.e. shortest length of offse...
