The Ecology of Language Practices in Worldwide Airline Flight Deck Operations
نویسندگان
چکیده
A large fraction of flight operations in the global commercial aviation system are conducted using a mixture of English and some other language(s). We examine the institutional factors that create this situation and the language practices adopted by non-native English speaking pilots to adapt within a complex ecology of constraints on language usage. We focus on an especially complex case, that of Japanese airlines.

متن کاملSimulation Modeling and Analysis of In-Flight Service Operations for Commercial Passenger Flights
Nowadays, in-flight comfort has become an essential characteristic to survive in domestic airline businesses. Air hostesses’ quality of service and response time to customer demand plays a vital role in enhancing quality of the flight experience and passenger satisfaction. However, additional requirements on air hostess expose them to fatigue which could eventually result in job dissatisfac...
متن کاملA Flight Deck Decision Support Tool for Autonomous Airborne Operations
NASA is developing a flight deck decision support tool to support research into autonomous operations in a future distributed air/ground traffic management environment. This interactive real-time decision aid, referred to as the Autonomous Operations Planner (AOP), will enable the flight crew to plan autonomously in the presence of dense traffic and complex flight management constraints. In ass...
متن کاملAn Operational Concept and Evaluation of Airline Based En Route Sequencing and Spacing
This paper describes an operational concept for airline operations centers (AOC) to implement desired arrival sequences and spacing over an en route arrival merge fix and reports the results of an initial field-test. The operational concept is termed Airline Based En route Sequencing and Spacing (ABESS). ABESS allows the AOC to set up arrival flows for transition into advanced flight procedures...
متن کاملA Multi-Cultural Study of Paper Use in the Flight Deck
It has been proposed that computer-based technologies will soon replace paper documents in the commercial airline flight deck. This article describes the nature of paper-use practices in the present-day flight deck. We hope that an improved understanding of the roles currently played by paper documents will contribute to more effective design of the systems that will replace or complement them....
