The Need for a Second Black Hole at the Galactic Center

چکیده
Deep infra-red observations and long-term monitoring programs have provided dynamical evidence for a supermassive black hole of mass 3 × 10M⊙ associated with the radio source Sagitarrius A ∗ at the center of our Galaxy. The brightest stars orbiting within 0.1 parsecs of the black hole appear to be young, massive main sequence stars, in spite of an environment near the black hole that is hostile to star formation. We discuss mechanisms by which stars born outside the central parsec can sink towards the black hole and conclude that the drag coming from plausible stellar populations does not operate on the short timescales required by the stellar ages. We propose that these stars were dragged in by a second black hole of mass ∼ 10M⊙, which would be classified as an intermediate-mass black hole. We discuss the implications for the stellar populations and the kinematics in the Galactic center. Finally we note that continued astrometric monitoring of the central radio source offers the prospect for a direct detection of such objects.

TheGalactic Center – anAGN on a starvation diet
The Galactic Center shows evidence for the presence of three important AGN ingredients: a Black Hole (M• ∼ 10 M⊙), an accretion disk (10 −8.5 − 10M⊙/yr) and a powerful jet (jet power ≥ 10% disk luminosity). However, the degree of activity is very low and can barely account for the energetics of the whole central region. Neverthelss, in the very inner arsecond the central engine becomes dominant...
متن کاملSupermassive Black Hole at the Galactic Center ∗
We derive an analytical expression of a shadow size as a function of a charge in the Reissner – Nordström (RN) metric. Using the derived expression we consider shadows for negative tidal charges and charges corresponding to naked singularities q = Q/M > 1, where Q and M are black hole charge and mass, respectively. An introduction of a negative tidal charge q can describes black hole solutions ...
متن کاملAstrometric Monitoring of Stellar Orbits at the Galactic Center with a Next Generation Large Telescope
We show that with a Next Generation Large Telescope one can detect the accelerated motions of ∼ 100 stars orbiting the massive black hole at the Galactic center. The positions and velocities of these stars will be measured to astrometric and spectroscopic precision several times better than currently attainable enabling detailed measurements of the gravitational potential in the neighborhood of...
متن کاملOrganizational Black Hole Theory
There are issues in organizations that require new theoretical formulation. Hence, metaphorical theorizing is used in the study of organizations to interpret them and understand their complexities. In this method, the organization is likened to an entity and one of the key features of that entity is generalized to the organization. It should be borne in mind that most organizational theories ar...
متن کاملThe black hole at the galactic center as a possible retro-lens for the S2 orbiting star
Holz & Wheeler (2002) have recently proposed that a Schwarzschild black hole may act as a retro-lens which, if illuminated by a powerful light source, deflects light ray paths to large bending angles and a series of luminous arcs (or rings in the case of aligned objects) centered on the black hole may form. Obviously, the most convenient geometry to get retro-lensing images would be that of a v...
