چکیده

We develop an automated technique for detecting damped Lyman̨ absorbers (DLAs) along spectroscopic sightlines to quasi-stellar objects (QSOs or quasars). The detection of DLAs in large-scale spectroscopic surveys such as SDSS–III is critical to address outstanding cosmological questions, such as the nature of galaxy formation. We use nearly 50 000 QSO spectra to learn a tailored Gaussian process model for quasar emission spectra, which we apply to the DLA detection problem via Bayesian model selection. We demonstrate our method’s effectiveness with a large-scale validation experiment on over 100 000 spectra, with excellent performance.

AGN Zoo and Classications of Active Galaxies

We review the variety of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) classes (so-calledAGN zoo") and classification schemes of galaxies by activity types based on their optical emission-line spectrum, as well as other parameters and other than optical wave-length ranges. A historical overview of discoveries of various types of active galaxies is given, including Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies, QSOs, BL Lace...

Gaussian Processes for Identifying Damped Lyman-α Systems in Spectroscopic Surveys

We present an application of Gaussian processes to the problem of discovering “damped Lyman-α systems” (DLAs), dense regions of hydrogen gas that are likely the birthplace of galaxies like the Milky Way. We apply this method to a large spectroscopic survey of quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III (SDSS-III).

The Identification of Quasars Behind Elliptical Galaxies and Clusters of Galaxies

The detection of resonance absorption lines against known objects such as individual galaxies and clusters of galaxies is a powerful approach for studying the gas content of these systems. We describe an efficient method of identifying background quasars suitable for absorption line studies. In this finding technique, we identify serendipitous X-ray sources, about 1/8 of which are suitably brig...

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups

It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...

A key argument in favor of orientation based unification schemes is the finding that among the most powerful 3CRR radio sources the (apparent) median linear size of quasars is smaller than that of radio galaxies, which supports the idea that quasars are a subset of radio galaxies, distinguished by being viewed at smaller angles to the line of sight. Recent measurements of radio sizes for a few ...
