In 1982, David spent a sabbatical year in Paris at the Laboratoire ofÉconométrie de l' ´ Ecole Polytechnique. He enjoyed so much his stay there that he came back to buy a flat. The atmosphere at the Laboratoire was a little bit unusual. The large and beautiful building, right in the center of Paris, was almost empty, left by its students who had moved outside Paris, and occupied by a handful of lucky researchers. There was a tennis court in the yard, and I must confess that our collaboration that year mostly took place on the court. 1 What David liked most was to share his passions, and playing tennis was one of them. Of course research was another one. David would talk on mathematical 'puzzles' to anyone interested, young or old, mathematician or not, without a priori nor condescendence. Doing research was an enjoyable part of his everyday life, as eating good food, attending jazz concerts or playing tennis, and his collaborators always end up his friends. Ahmet Alkan, a former student, was one of those friends, and joined us for some time. Matchings, marriages, assignments became a hot topic in the place that year. I was working on extending the Vickrey auction to the case of several objects in the Shapley-Shubik assignment model, Martine Quinzii [5] found an existence proof for the equilibrium in the model without transferability and David [4] found another one. 2 Once the existence was settled, the natural thing to do was to investigate the structure of equilibria (the core) and the incentive properties in the assignment game without transferable utility (Demange and Gale [2]). I do not remember how we started our work with Ahmet on envy-free allocations (Alkan, Demange, and Gale [1]), but I remember we finished the paper in Istanbul and then on a boat trip around Bodrum. But this is another story, David in Turkey. Of course there was no electronic mail and we exchanged ideas and proofs by regular mail. I have kept some correspondence and found a letter relating to what I think was our last project (unfortunately it was a failure). If I am not wrong, the problem, a zero-sum game, was as follows. • Player I has a deck of cards, each one with a different number. Players alternate turns.
