چکیده

Hormonal synchroniza on protocols have been incorporated widely into reproduc ve management programs by dairy farmers (Caraviello et al., 2006; Norman et al., 2009). The ini al impact of TAI protocols on 21-day pregnancy rates in U.S. dairy herds has been to increase the AI service rate (Norman et al., 2009); however, a deeper understanding of the physiology underlying the Ovsynch protocol has allowed for a drama c increase in fer lity to med ar fi cial insemina on (TAI). As the tle of this paper suggests, perhaps it is now more appropriate to refer to the latest itera on of hormonal synchroniza on protocols as fer lity programs for lacta ng dairy cows.

Estrous Synchronization Programs for Dairy Cows and Heifers

Introduction: Although milk production as measured by rolling herd averages has increased markedly for dairy herds in the Western United States over the last decade, reproductive performance of these herds has declined significantly. Average days open have increased by 25 days and fertility has declined as measured by an increase of 0.37 services per conception and first service conception rate...

The Babcock Institute University of Wisconsin Dairy Updates

Managers of high producing dairy herds have known for some time that optimizing reproductive efficiency is an essential issue in maintaining profitability of a dairy herd. A recent survey by the University of Wisconsin Center for Dairy Profitability asked a random sample of 2,700 dairy producers in Wisconsin to rank the importance of different dairy issues to the future profitability of their b...

Heat Detection and Timing of Artifi cial Insemination Detection

Detection of estrus (heat) is often cited as the most costly component and undoubtedly, the major limiting factor to the success of A.I. programs on many dairy farms. Incorrect detection of estrus is related to loss of income due to extended calving intervals, milk loss, increased veterinary cost, increased heifer rearing cost, and slowed genetic progress. To achieve excellent heat detection, m...

Effect of uterine environment on embryo production and fertility in cows

Oocyte fertilization rates in bovines following artificial insemination or natural mating are generally good (~90%). Curiously, only about one third of these pregnancies remain until 30 days post-AI in dairy cows. Thus, most pregnancies are lost between fertilization and early embryonic growth. Although classical pathways describing that lower progesterone post-AI is the main culprit to these e...

Applying nutrition and physiology to improve reproduction in dairy cattle.

The establishment and maintenance of pregnancy in lactating dairy cows is a complex biological event that is influenced by a multitude of factors, from the reproductive biology of the cow to managerial aspects of the dairy farm. It is often mentioned in the scientific literature that fertility in dairy cows has declined concurrent with major advances in milk production. Some of this decline is ...
