چکیده

Any tiny improvement of modern turbomachinery components require nowadays a large amount of design evaluations. Every evaluation runs time consuming simulations. Reducing the computational cost of the simulations allows to run more evaluations, thus reaching a higher design improvement. In this work, an Nvidia Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) of Kepler generation is used to accelerate the FiniteVolume CFD flow evaluation as part of an inhouse multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) algorithm. The validated double precision GPU solver is up to 30x times faster for inviscid applications and up to 10 times faster for turbulent viscous cases than a the serial code running on an Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E3-1240 v3. The gain on the CFD simulation time make it possible to run the MDO optimizer with explicit solver on a workstation under affordable time budget.

Numerical Investigation of a Two-stage Counter-rotating Turbine with Transition Modeling and Prediction Improvement with Time-accurate Calculations

Accurate numerical simulations depend on the correct prediction of all relevant flow phenomena. For many aeronautical devices such as turbomachinery the behavior of boundary layers, wall-shear-stress and wall heat transfer are significant for the performance. Turbulence and transition influence such flow characteristics. Onset and extent of transition can therefore be of high importance for the...

Steady-State Anderson Accelerated Coupling of Lattice Boltzmann and Navier-Stokes Solvers

We present an Anderson acceleration-based approach to spatially couple three-dimensional Lattice Boltzmann and Navier–Stokes (LBNS) flow simulations. This allows to locally exploit the computational features of both fluid flow solver approaches to the fullest extent and yields enhanced control to match the LB and NS degrees of freedom within the LBNS overlap layer. Designed for parallel Schwarz...

Stabilization of Linear Flow Solver for Turbomachinery Aeroelasticity Using Recursive Projection Method

The linear analysis of turbomachinery aeroelasticity relies on the assumption of small level of unsteadiness and requires the solution of both the nonlinear steady and the linear unsteady flow equations. The objective of the analysis is to compute a complex flow solution that represents the amplitude and phase of the unsteady flow perturbation for the frequency of unsteadiness of interest. The ...
