Presbycusis and auditory brainstem responses: a review

چکیده
Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) or presbycusis is a complex phenomenon consisting of elevation of the hearing levels as well as changes in the auditory processing. Although many adults retain good hearing as they age, hearing loss associated with ageing is common among elderly persons. There are a number of pathophysiological processes underlying age-related changes to functional components. Presbycusis is especially caused by cochlear degeneration, most pronounced in the basal cochlear coil. Causes include physiological ageing processes as well as endogenous or exogenous causes. The common form of hardness of hearing seen in old age is not due to physiological age-related changes, but rather to a complex sensorineural pattern of injury. In the industrial countries, two main exogenous causes are exposure to loud noise and obesity[2]. Some of the changes that occur in the aging auditory system may significantly influence the interpretation of the auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) in comparison with the ABRs of younger adults.

متن کاملAuditory Brainstem Response Wave Amplitude Characteristics as a Diagnostic Tool in Children with Speech Delay with Unknown Causes
Speech delay with an unknown cause is a problem among children. This diagnosis is the last differential diagnosis after observing normal findings in routine hearing tests. The present study was undertaken to determine whether auditory brainstem responses to click stimuli are different between normally developing children and children suffering from delayed speech with unknown causes. In this cr...
متن کاملThe Effects of Aging on Auditory Processing.
The effects of aging on peripheral hearing function are well known, and age-related hearing loss (presbycusis) is common among those over 60. audiologist during a typical hearing evaluation considers whether test results conform to expectations for a presbycusis hearing loss, which is a gradually sloping hearing loss in the high frequencies. What we may fail to consider, however, are the effect...
متن کاملInvestigation of auditory brainstem function in elderly diabetic patients with presbycusis.
We performed brainstem auditory evoked potential (BAEP) examinations in 100 patients older than 60 years and having type I diabetes mellitus and presbycusis. The aim of our investigation was to compare the BAEP results of this group with those of healthy controls with presbycusis and to look for possible correlations between alteration of the auditory brainstem function and the aging of elderly...
متن کاملAge-related changes in the guinea pig auditory cortex: relationship with brainstem changes and comparison with tone-induced hearing loss.
Elderly people often show degraded hearing performance and have difficulties in understanding speech, particularly in noisy environments. Although loss in peripheral hearing sensitivity is an important factor in explaining these low performances, central alterations also have an impact but their exact contributions remained unclear. In this study, we focus on the functional effects of aging on ...
