Austrian Economics and the “market Test”: a Comment on Laband and Tollison
نویسنده
چکیده
While teaching my classmates and me graduate microeconomics at Auburn University in 1995, David Laband recounted a story from his first year of doctoral studies in economics at Virginia Polytechnic Institute. As he read for a class taught by Gordon Tullock, Laband came upon what he believed was an error by Milton Friedman. The then-graduate student went to Tullock’s office, where the professor, without ever looking up, replied that if an issue came down between Friedman and Laband, he would automatically side with Friedman. Tullock then dismissed his student with a curt, “Goodbye.”

On Secondhandism and Scientific Appraisal
There is a quiet but nonetheless significant and persistent disagreement among members of the scholarly community of economists regarding appraisal of scientific merit. On one side are those who believe, implicitly or explicitly, that there is a competitive market for scientific ideas in economics in which major contributions (and the individuals who make them) are identified relatively efficie...

Although American health policy debates address similar problems to other developed nations, it has factual and ideological specificities. I agree with Chinitz and Rodwin on the dominance of micro-economics thinking. However, I am not certain that learning from management theory or modifying medical education will be powerful enough to change the system. The vested interests of the stakeholders...

In a recent editorial in this journal Pierre-Gerlier Forest foretells a coming revolution in health policy based on the synthesis of four conceptual innovations and one technological breakthrough. As much as I agree with the intellectual story told in this editorial I present a more skeptical view of the effect of paradigm shifts on healthcare systems on the ground. I argue that ideas triumph w...

Casting a chronological glance at the trend of studies in the evolutionary economics area suffices to come to the point that the approach enjoys a long historical background. It is to say that the studies conducted in this area consist of miscellaneous thoughts ranging from insight of early Marxists to Austrian neo-liberalists. Nevertheless, a landmark study that paved the way for the developme...
متن کاملThe “ Market ” for Academic Research
It seems that nothing unites the interests of academic economists like the pitfalls and mysteries of the publication process. Despite nearly universal dissatisfaction expressed with the process---and despite journals piled from floor to ceiling unread---economists read, copy, discuss and debate the latest “ranking” article either with much glee or with much condemnation. Such ranking systems ar...
