Immunity following the Injection of Monkeys with Mixtures of Poliomyelitis Virus and Convalescent Human Serum
نویسنده
چکیده
1. Experiments are reported on the use of poliomyelitis virus neutralized by specific antiserum as an agent to induce active immunity against the experimental disease in monkeys. 2. The results indicate that protection can be conferred upon a certain number of the treated animals. 3. The neutralized material gave rise in no instance to symptoms of disease in the treated monkeys. 4. Active poliomyelitis virus, suitably neutralized by admixture with convalescent serum, was without pathogenic effect when given by repeated nasal instillations.

Experiments with the Virus of Poliomyelitis
1. Efforts to adapt the virus of poliomyelitis to the rabbit organism and to produce poliomyelitis in rabbits by testicular injection and by brain injection after testicular passage produced no evidence that the virus could be adapted in this manner. Suggestive symptoms produced in very young rabbits were duplicated in non-specifically treated and in uninoculated controls. The admixture of a va...
متن کاملSecond Attacks of Poliomyelitis
1. It was found in forty rhesus monkeys that intracerebral, intraocular, intracutaneous, intraperitoneal, intraspinal, and neural inoculations of poliomyelitis virus produced no lesions in the olfactory bulbs despite the fact that the animals contracted pronounced paralyses. This indicated that the virus could be restricted to certain neuronal systems. 2. Similarly intranasal inoculation of sev...
متن کاملHumoral Antibodies and Resistance of Vaccinated and Convalescent Monkeys to Poliomyelitis Virus
1. Monkeys convalescent from a paralytic attack of poliomyelitis develop humoral antibodies slowly; in the present series their first appearance in most was at 2 months and in some not until 3 months after the attack. 2. Convalescent monkeys display resistance to reinfection with the same strain by the nasal route long before antibodies become demonstrable in their serum, in this respect differ...
متن کاملTherapeutic Experiments with Rosenow's Antipoliomyelitic Serum
Two series of experiments are described in which Rosenow's anti-poliomyelitic serum, so called, has been compared with the immune serum derived from monkeys which have convalesced or recovered from experimental poliomyelitis. The experiments consisted in introducing an active virus of polio-myelitis into the blood and of injecting the two kinds of serum into the cerebrospinal meninges according...
متن کاملActive Immunization against Poliomyelitis in Monkeys
1. A combination of poliomyelitis virus and specific human serum is effective for the production of active immunity. 2. For each gram of active virus given intradermally as an emulsion, 6 cc. of human immune serum, injected subcutaneously, was required in our experiments to protect a monkey from paralysis. Some degree of active immunity was induced. 3. Immunity, without symptom of the disease, ...
