Investigation on Deformation and Wear of Zr-based Amorphous Alloys

Nanoindentation with spherical and Berkovich indenters, reciprocating wear and dynamic impact tests were conducted to investigate the deformation and wear behavior of two Zr-based metallic glasses. The results indicated that the indenter shape may have an effect on the displacement bursts in the load-penetration curves as no apparent bursts could be observed when a Berkovich indenter was used. This possible reason was postulated as the higher stress developed under a Berovich indenter prompting a large number of small shear bands, confirmed by the steps observed around the indents. Compared to Zr55Al10Ni5Cu3 alloy, Zr41.25Ti13.75Ni10Cu12.5Be22.5 has higher resistance to both wear and dynamic impact.
