چکیده

We explore how the expulsion of gas from star cluster forming cloud cores due to supernova explosions affects the shape of the initial clustermass function, that is, themass function of star clusterswhen effects of gas expulsion are over. We demonstrate that if the radii of cluster-forming gas cores are roughly constant over the coremass range, as supported by observations, then more massive cores undergo slower gas expulsion. Therefore, for a given star formation efficiency, moremassive cores retain a larger fraction of stars after gas expulsion. The initial cluster mass functionmay thus differ from the coremass function substantially, with the final shape depending on the star formation efficiency. Amassindependent star formation efficiency of 20% turns a power-law core mass function into a bell-shaped initial cluster mass function, while mass-independent efficiencies of order 40% preserve the shape of the core mass function. Scaling relations in dynamical evolution of star clusters

We have carried out a series of small scale collisional N-body calculations of single-mass star clusters to investigate the dependence of the lifetime of star clusters on their initial parameters. Our models move through an external galaxy potential with a logarithmic density profile and they are limited by a cut-off radius. In order to find scaling relations between the lifetime of star cluste...

Young Massive Clusters - Formation Efficiencies and (Initial) Mass Functions

Globular clusters are often assumed to be good tracers of major star formation episodes in their host galaxies. While observations over the past 2 decades have confirmed the presence of young objects with globular cluster-like properties in many galaxies, it is still not well understood exactly how the formation efficiency of bound star clusters relative to field stars and their mass spectrum d...

Star formation in galaxies and star clusters

This thesis is devoted to star formation from galaxy-scales (≈ 10 000 pc) to sub-star cluster-scales (≈ 0.1 pc). I develop and test a new method to derive star formation histories of Galaxies from their star cluster content, in particular the most massive star clusters. This is followed by an application of this method to the Large Magellanic Cloud, where the results of this new method are conf...

The star formation efficiency and its relation to variations in the initial mass function

We investigate how the dynamical state of a turbulently supported, 1000M⊙, molecular cloud affects the properties of the cluster it forms, focusing our discussion on the star formation efficiency (SFE) and the initial mass function (IMF). A variety of initial energy states are examined in this paper, ranging from clouds with |Egrav| = 0.1Ekin to clouds with |Egrav| = 10Ekin , and for both isoth...

Residual gas expulsion from young globular clusters

The results of N -body simulations of the effects of the expulsion of residual gas (that gas not used in star formation) from very young globular clusters is presented. Globular clusters of a variety of initial masses, Galactocentric radii, concentration and initial mass function slope with star formation efficiencies of < ∼ 50% were simulated. The residual gas was expelled by the action of mas...
