Intra-firm wage inequality and firm performance – First evidence from German linked employer-employee-data

چکیده
Economic theory suggests both positive and negative relationships between intrafirm wage inequality and productivity. This paper contributes to the growing empirical literature on this subject. We combine German employer-employee-data for the years 1995-2005 with inequality measures using the whole wage distribution of a firm and rely on dynamic panel-data estimators to control for unobserved heterogeneity, simultaneity problems and possible state dependence. Our results indicate a relative minor influence of intra-firm wage inequality on firm productivity. If anything, they provide some support for a view suggesting that some inequality may be beneficial, while too much leads to a detrimental effect on productivity.

Unobserved Individual and Firm Heterogeneity in Wage and Tenure Functions: Evidence from German Linked Employer-Employee Data We estimate wage and job tenure functions that include individual and firm effects capturing time-invariant unobserved worker and firm heterogeneity using German linked employeremployee data (LIAB data set). We find that both types of heterogeneity are correlated to the ...

متن کاملThe Dispersion of Employees’ Wage Increases and Firm Performance
In this contribution we examine the interrelation between the distribution of intra-firm wage increases and firm performance. Previous studies have focused on the dispersion of wage levels in order to examine for the empirical dominance of positive monetary incentive effects compared to adverse effects due to fairness considerations. We argue that the dispersion of wage increases rather than wa...

This paper investigates the patterns of within establishment wage inequality in four European countries (Belgium, Ireland, Italy and Spain). Using matched employeremployee data (ESES) we analyse the effects of work organization practices, pay policies, bargaining procedures and industrial relations arrangements on the pattern of wage differentials in the firm. The main findings suggest that bot...

The Effect of Firm-Level Contracts on the Structure of Wages: Evidence from Matched Employer-Employee Data In Spain, as in several other European countries, sectoral bargaining agreements are automatically extended to cover all firms in an industry. Employers and employees can also negotiate firm-specific contracts. We use a large matched employer-employee data set to study the effects of firm-...
