Circular solitons do not exist in photorefractive media.
The shape of two-dimensional solitary beams propagating in photorefractive media with an externally applied field is studied. The analytical results indicate that, for both focusing and defocusing nonlinearities, radially symmetric self-channeled beams do not exist. Some recent experiments are interpreted in light of the present results.
متن کاملThe Liquid Crystal Light Valve with Optical Feedback: a Case Study in Pattern Formation
Pattern formation in different systems has attracted a growing attention in these last years. In the field of optics, transverse profiles of propagating beams have been investigated since the first studies on interference and diffraction. This initial interest was raised to a new level by the growing importance of nonlinear effects that could be observed with high intensity beams, typically las...
متن کاملPhase conjugation involving incoherent counterpropagating beams in photorefractive media.
We propose and analyze a new type of phase conjugation between counterpropagating beams in photorefractive materials based on diffraction from transmission gratings only. This effect does not require temporal coherence between the counterpropagating beams and may occur spontaneously, with no external seeding, even with wide (frequency) band light sources.
متن کاملPropagation of light beams in anisotropic nonlinear media: From symmetry breaking to spatial turbulence.
Propagation and spatial evolution of light beams in nonlinear media is a central topic of nonlinear optical dynamics. There has been continuing interest in this topic since the initial investigations of self-trapping of light beams in nonlinear media @1,2#. Analysis of the stability and nonlinear evolution of solitary-wave solutions of nonlinear propagation equations is one of the most crucial ...
متن کاملPhotorefractive Spatial Solitons
Photorefractive crystals are electro-optic dielectrics that host a small amount of photosensitive impurities. Light propagation leads to the generation of outof-equilibrium mobile charge, that, in order to reach a stable electro-static configuration, redistributes throughout the crystal. The ensuing space-charge field, modifying electro-optically the crystal index of refraction, changes the tra...
