چکیده

Hundreds of millions multiple choice exams are given every year in the United States. Form filling shift errors, where a single absent-minded mismarking displaces a long run of correct answers, can substantially reduce scores and invalidate the results of the exam. In this paper, we study the prevalence, impact and detectability of shift errors by analyzing over 100,000 Scholastic Amplitude Tests. We can effectively distinguish approximately 50% of the these shifts, and 80% of the substantial shift errors which reduce the score by 3 or more correct answers. Our resul ts suggest that approximately 1.8% of all SAT exams contain shift errors. Extrapolating these results over all multiple choice exams implies that students make millions of undetected shift errors each year. We describe our methods that accurately detect and correct the majority of significant shift errors while guaranteeing nearly no false detections. We argue that our methods should be integrated into automated testing procedures.

Shift Error Detection in Standardized Exams

Hundreds of millions of multiple choice exams are given every year in the United States. These exams permit formfilling shift errors, where an absent-minded mismarking displaces a long run of correct answers. A shift error can substantially alter the exam’s score, and thus invalidate it. In this paper, we develop algorithms to accurately detect and correct shift errors, while guaranteeing few f...

An approach to fault detection and correction in design of systems using of Turbo ‎codes‎

We present an approach to design of fault tolerant computing systems. In this paper, a technique is employed that enable the combination of several codes, in order to obtain flexibility in the design of error correcting codes. Code combining techniques are very effective, which one of these codes are turbo codes. The Algorithm-based fault tolerance techniques that to detect errors rely on the c...

Diagnostic Measures in Ridge Regression Model with AR(1) Errors under the Stochastic Linear Restrictions

Outliers and influential observations have important effects on the regression analysis. The goal of this paper is to extend the mean-shift model for detecting outliers in case of ridge regression model in the presence of stochastic linear restrictions when the error terms follow by an autoregressive AR(1) process. Furthermore, extensions of measures for diagnosing influential observations are ...

Evaluation of cumulative kidney activity in pediatric nuclear scan of the bladder using conjugate view method and four different techniques for correcting background radiations

Background: At present, in nuclear medicine to calculate the cumulative activity of various organs, different techniques are being used to correct the background radiations in the conjugate view method. Each of these techniques considers the effect and weight of background radiations to a different extent. These background radiations can cause errors in cumulative activity calculations. The pur...

Detecting and Correcting Morpho-syntactic Errors in Real Texts

This paper presents a system which detects and corrects morpho-syntactic errors in Dutch texts. It includes a spelling corrector and a shift-reduce parser for Augmented Context-free Grammars. The spelling corrector is based on trigram and triphone analysis. The parser is an extension of the well-known Tomita algorithm (Tomita, 1986). The parser interacts with the spelling corrector and handles ...
