چکیده

Amoebiasis is common in Asia, Africa, and South America, and is endemic in many regions of the Philippines1-4. Hepatic involvement is a frequent extra-intestinal complication which is encountered in 3 to 9% of the cases of amoebiasis. In Africa, over a period of 20 years, the King Edward VIII Hospital reported 2,074 cases of hepatic abscess, while in New York City at the Mt. Sinai Hospital only 11 cases were seen in approximately 500,000 admissions2,3. The Santo Tomas University Hospital in Manila had an incidence of one hepatic amoebic abscess per thousand admissions over a ten-year period4,5. Despite the advances in diagnostic tests and management, amoebic liver abscess remains to be a health problem in many parts of the world, where hygiene is not properly observed.

Specific circulating immune complexes in amoebic liver abscess.

A micro enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to detect the presence of amoebic antigen in polyethylene-glycol-precipitated circulating immune complexes (CIC). A cutoff dilution of greater than 1:160 for the precipitates was taken to be of clinical significance. Among the patients with amoebic liver abscess, 93% (14 of 15 confirmed cases) had indications of amoebic antigen in CIC. In 57% o...

Pathophysiology of jaundice in amoebic liver abscess.

We studied the mechanism of jaundice in patients with amoebic liver abscess. We prospectively...

Amoebic liver abscess (ALA) with jaundice and encephalopathy is a rare occurrence and has been recognised and studied more frequently in recent years. We present a case of massive ALA presenting with jaundice, hepatic encephalopathy, and septicaemia that was treated successfully with percutaneous drainage of the abscess, right-sided chest tube insertion, and anti-amoebic therapy.
