چکیده

The Resource Description Framework (RDF) is a Semantic Web standard that provides a data language, simply called RDF, as well as a lightweight ontology language, called RDF Schema. We investigate embeddings of RDF in logic and show how standard logic programming and description logic technology can be used for reasoning with RDF. We subsequently consider extensions of RDF with datatype support, considering D entailment, defined in the RDF semantics specification, and D* entailment, a semantic weakening of D entailment introduced by ter Horst. We use the embeddings and the properties of the logics to establish novel upper bounds for the complexity of deciding entailment. We subsequently establish two novel lower bounds, establishing that RDFS entailment is PTime-complete and that simple-D entailment is coNP-hard, when considering arbitrary datatypes, both in the size of the entailing graph, indicating that RDFS may not be as lightweight as one may expect.

Finite Models in RDF(S), with Datatypes

The details of reasoning in RDF [2] and RDFS [1] are generally well known. There is a model-theoretic semantics for RDF [3, 4] and there are sound and complete proof theories for RDF without datatypes [6]. However, the model-theoretic characteristics of RDF have been less studied, particularly when datatypes are added. We show that RDF reasoning can be performed by only considering finite model...

Logical Foundations of (e)RDF(S): Complexity and Reasoning

An important open question in the semantic Web is the precise relationship between the RDF(S) semantics and the semantics of standard knowledge representation formalisms such as logic programming and description logics. In this paper we address this issue by considering embeddings of RDF and RDFS in logic. Using these embeddings, combined with existing results about various fragments of logic, ...

Cyclic Datatypes modulo Bisimulation based on Second-Order Algebraic Theories

Cyclic data structures, such as cyclic lists, in functional programming are tricky to handle because of their cyclicity. This paper presents an investigation of categorical, algebraic, and computational foundations of cyclic datatypes. Our framework of cyclic datatypes is based on second-order algebraic theories of Fiore et al., which give a uniform setting for syntax, types, and computation ru...

From relational databases to Linked Data: R for the semantic web

Most of the current structured data in the world lives in relational Data bases (RDB). But statisticians and practitioners sooner or later will find themselves dealing with a different kind of structured representations in the Resource Description Framework (RDF). The logical evolution of the current Web of documents into a Web of Data (and ultimately a Semantic Web) requires mapping of vast qu...
