چکیده

The previous research suggests that a speaking style known as clear speech is more intelligible than casual conversational speech for hearing impaired listeners. The present paper is an extension of author’s previous work addressing the temporal modifications to the clear speech intelligibility advantage. The primary goal of this work is to determine whether clear speech enhances fricative intelligibility for normal-hearing listeners with simulated impairment. Two acoustic correlates of fricative consonants namely, noise duration and formant transition duration are time-expanded selectively by 50/ 100% of their original duration. The effects of consonant duration modifications on the perception of production-based features such as voicing and place of articulation were studied. The perception in noise tests are quantified in terms of information transmission analysis measures, in the presence of white noise-masker at three noise levels, 0 dB, +12 dB, and +6 dB. Results suggested that formant transition lengthening by 50% of their original duration reported significant intelligibility improvement with respect to place of articulation feature in all three vowel contexts, in consistent with previous findings. Noise duration lengthening by 50% and 100% have less perceptual significance and does not seem to carry cues to voicing and place of articulation.

Duration of frication noise required for identification of English fricatives.

Natural speech consonant-vowel (CV) syllables [( f, s, theta, s, v, z, ŏ] followed by [i, u, a]) were computer edited to include 20-70 ms of their frication noise in 10-ms steps as measured from their onset, as well as the entire frication noise. These stimuli, and the entire syllables, were presented to 12 subjects for consonant identification. Results show that the listener does not require t...

Co-articulatory Cues for Communication: An Investigation of Five Environments

We hypothesized that speakers adjust co-articulation in vowel–consonant (VC) sequences in order to provide listeners with enhanced perceptual cues to C, and that they do so specifically in those situations where primary cues to C place of articulation tend to be diminished. We tested this hypothesis in a speech production study of American English, measuring the duration and extent of VC forman...

Context-independent dynamic information for the perception of coarticulated vowels.

Most investigators agree that the acoustic information for American English vowels includes dynamic (time-varying) parameters as well as static "target" information contained in a single cross section of the syllable. Using the silent-center (SC) paradigm, the present experiment examined the case in which the initial and final portions of stop consonant-vowel-stop consonant (CVC) syllables cont...

Voicing assimilation in Catalan three-consonant clusters

Electroglottographic and acoustic data for Catalan three-consonant clusters composed of a wordand syllable-final C1C2 sequence and an underlyingly voiced C3 in wordand syllable-initial position were collected in order to verify whether a regressive voicing assimilation process operates on all obstruents placed at the C2 and C1 sites. Data reveal the presence of low percentages of vocal fold vib...

Consonant context effects on vowel sensorimotor adaptation

Speech sensorimotor adaptation is the short-term learning of modified articulator movements evoked through sensoryfeedback perturbations. A common experimental method manipulates acoustic parameters, such as formant frequencies, using real time resynthesis of the participant's speech to perturb auditory feedback. While some studies have examined phrases comprised of vowels, diphthongs, and semi...
