چکیده

The objective of this work is to present a numerical study of contaminant migration in saturated porous media. For this purpose, the advection-difussion equation describing the evolution of contaminant plumes in a vertical cross section of an aquifer is discretized employing a Total Variation Diminishing method (TVD), which provides an efficient way to eliminate spurious numerical oscillations .The stationary velocity field is computed using a hybridized mixed method. The initial concentration needed to determine the solution was specified using data from well samples. Numerical examples showing the implementation of the algorithm to describe groundwater contamination by cadmium in the Pampeano aquifer are presented. Jacqueline Köhn, Juan E. Santos and Eduardo E. Kruse. 2

Experimental and Mathematical Investigation of Time-Dependence of Contaminant Dispersivity in Soil

Laboratory and field experiments have shown that dispersivity is one of the key parameters in contaminant transport in porous media and varies with elapsed time. This time-dependence can be shown using a time-variable dispersivity function. The advantage of this function as opposed to constant dispersivity is that it has at least two coefficients that increase the accuracy of the dispersivity p...

Two-Dimensional Solute Transport with Exponential Initial Concentration Distribution and Varying Flow Velocity

The transport mechanism of contaminated groundwater has been a problematic issue for many decades, mainly due to the bad impact of the contaminants on the quality of the groundwater system. In this paper, the exact solution of two-dimensional advection-dispersion equation (ADE) is derived for a semi-infinite porous media with spatially dependent initial and uniform/flux boundary conditions. The...

Contaminant transport and biodegradation in saturated porous media: model development and simulation

A mathematical model is developed to describe the contaminant transport, sorption, and biodegradation in saturated porous media. In the model development, sorption was accounted for as a kinetic process for the contaminant transport. In addition, a double Monod function was incorporated into the model to describe the biodegradation of contaminants and utilization of oxygen. In the description o...

Numerical Simulation of Pollutant Transport in Fractured Vuggy Porous Karstic Aquifers

This paper begins with presenting a mathematical model for contaminant transport in the fractured vuggy porous media of a species of contaminant PCP . Two phases are numerically simulated for a process of contaminant and clean water infiltrated in the fractured vuggy porous media by coupling mixed finite element MFE method and finite volume method FVM , both of which are locally conservative, t...
