چکیده

Current state-of-the-art medical ultrasound scanners can depict structure and function, e.g. images of tissue and blood flow, with exceptional quality. However, the systems are large and relatively expensive. The clinical value and widespread acceptance of ultrasound as a diagnostic imaging modality opened an opportunity for Teratech Corporation to expand its technology by creating the TerasonTM 2000 Handheld Ultrasound System—an ultrasound system that provides excellent image quality while being much smaller in size and lower in cost than conventional systems. Unlike conventional machines with proprietary system architecture, the Terason 2000 deploys an open architecture that supports direct access to image data files and facilitates seamless integration into the emerging realm of digital radiology, including internet-based teleradiology, medical informatics systems, and digital image archiving and retrieval. To achieve these goals, Teratech leveraged its unique silicon system-on-a-chip capability, and dramatically reduced the typical rack-mounted conventional system to a Terason SmartProbeTM weighing approximately 10 ounces (0.28 kg). Employing Teratech’s proprietary Charge Domain Processing (CDP), the beamformer supports a continuous computation throughput of 10.2 billion operations/s and a delay update rate of 10 billion bits/s while consuming less than 1W, providing more than 10-fold savings in power and weight compared to the conventional implementation. The system is linked to a host PC through an IEEE 1394 (a.k.a. FireWire) serial cable. The PC, running Windows NT or 2000 with plug-and-play standard compatibility, allows the system to utilize all of the control, display, videorecording, and networking capabilities currently available for PCs.

Design, Evaluation and Prototyping of a New Robotic Mechanism for Ultrasound Imaging

This paper presents a new robotic mechanism for ultrasound imaging. The device is placed on a patient's body by an operator, and an ultrasound expert controls the motions of the device to obtain ultrasound images. The paper focuses on the robotic mechanism that performs ultrasound imaging. The design of the mechanism is based on two approaches to produce center of motion for an ultrasound probe...

PET and MRI-guided focused ultrasound surgery for hypoxic-tissue ablation combined with radiotherapy in solid tumors

Background: The rationale was to develop an ablation approach to destroy regions of tumor resistant to radiation and thus reduce the time required for whole tumor ablation, while improving overall tumor control after radiotherapy. Materials and Methods: The system is composed of a micro positron emission tomography (mPET), 7T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and a customized MRI-compatible foc...

Medical imaging using capacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducer arrays.

We are investigating the use of capacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducers (cMUT's) for use in medical imaging. We propose an ultrasound probe architecture designed to provide volumetric ultrasound imaging from within an endoscope channel. A complete automated experimental system has been implemented for testing the imaging performance of cMUT arrays. This PC-based system includes custom-d...

Monte Carlo-based optimization of a gamma probe system for sentinel lymph node mapping

Introduction: Sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) is a standard surgical technique to identify sentinel lymph node (SLN) for the staging of early breast cancer. Nowadays, two methods are used for the identification of SLN: blue dye method aiding visually and radioactive dye using gamma detector. A wide range of gamma probe systems with different design and performance are used in...

Trimodality imaging system and intravascular endoscopic probe: combined optical coherence tomography, fluorescence imaging and ultrasound imaging.

In this Letter, we present a trimodality imaging system and an intravascular endoscopic probe for the detection of early-stage atherosclerotic plaques. The integrated system is able to acquire optical coherence tomography (OCT), fluorescence, and ultrasound images and simultaneously display them in real time. A trimodality intravascular endoscopic probe of 1.2 mm in diameter and 7 mm in length ...
