Shift Invariant Spaces and Shift Preserving Operators on Locally Compact Abelian Groups

We investigate shift invariant subspaces of $L^2(G)$, where $G$ is a locally compact abelian group. We show that every shift invariant space can be decomposed as an orthogonal sum of spaces each of which is generated by a single function whose shifts form a Parseval frame. For a second countable locally compact abelian group $G$ we prove a useful Hilbert space isomorphism, introduce range funct...

On asymptotic dimension of groups

We prove a version of the countable union theorem for asymptotic dimension and we apply it to groups acting on asymptotically finite dimensional metric spaces. As a consequence we obtain the following finite dimensionality theorems. A) An amalgamated product of asymptotically finite dimensional groups has finite asymptotic dimension: asdimA ∗C B <∞. B) Suppose that G′ is an HNN extension of a g...

Existentially Closed Dimension Groups

A partially ordered Abelian group M is algebraically (existentially) closed in a class C M of such structures just in case any finite system of weak inequalities (and negations of weak inequalities), defined over M, is solvable in M if solvable in some N ⊇ M in C. After characterizing existentially closed dimension groups this paper derives amalgamation properties for dimension groups, dimensio...

Growing forests in abelian p-groups

At the center of the theory of abelian p-groups are the classical theorems of Ulm, Zippin and Kaplansky, going back to the thirties, that classify countable p-groups by their Ulm invariants: the uniqueness theorem is referred to as Ulm's theorem, the existence theorem as Zippin's theorem. For each ordinal , the -th Ulm invariant of G can be de ned as the dimension fG( ) of the vector space (ove...
