Succinic dehydrogenase and cytochrome oxidase in epidermal carcinogenesis induced by methylcholanthrene in mice.

چکیده
The role of the alkalies, alkaline earths, and of iron, copper, and zinc in epidermal carcinogenesis in mice has been described (4) and the integration of the chemical, physical, and histological changes in mouse epidermis undergoing carcinogenesis has been reviewed by Cowdry (7). The investigations on the minerals revealed that the calcium, iron, zinc, and copper contents of hyperplastlc (methylcholanthrene-treated) epidermis were significantly less than that of normal epidermis, and furthermore the content of these metals in the squamous cell carcinoma was reduced to even lower values. Since calcium may be associated with the succinic dehydrogenase system ( 15, 21, 27), and copper and iron with cytochrome oxidase (20), experimen:s were undertaken to study these enzymes in the epiderntis of mice under the carcinogenic influence of methylcholanthrene.

The water content in the epidermis of mice undergoing carcinogenesis by methylcholanthrene.
Studies on the role of the minerals in epidermal carcinogenesis of mice induced by methylcholanthrene have been described (2), and the need for the determination of the water content of the epidermis became obvious in investigations on the succinic dehydrogenase and cytochrome oxidase activities of the epidermis (3). Since the latter are expressed as cu. mm. of oxygen consumed per mgm. dry weig...

The accumulation of lactic acid in tumor tissue (15) suggests an inadequacy in the oxidative mechanism. A deficiency of one of the components of the oxidative mechanism, cytochrome c, was demonstrated in the first paper of this series (6). The present article reports the decreased activities of succinic dehydrogenase and of cytochrome oxidase in tumor tissues. These enzymes together with cytoch...

I n a recent publication Reynafarje and Potter found an interesting difference "between normal liver and hepatoma cells (14). These investigators showed that the activity of DPN1-TPN 1 transhydrogenase and TPNHl-cytochrome c reductase was absent or present only in negligible amounts in homogenates and cell fractions of the Novikoff hepatoma, whereas in liver D P N T P N transhydrogenase was fou...

متن کاملThe Metabolism of the Kidney in Experimental Renal Hypertension
These investigations are part of an attempt to study and interpret the intermediary metabolism of the kidneys in experimental renal hypertension. Hypertension was produced in dogs by the clamping procedure of Goldblatt and associates or by the silk perinephritis method of Page. Enzymatic studies were made by means of Warburg's manometric method. Cytochrome c was in addition determined spectroph...
