چکیده

We demonstrate that the “sub-keplerian” rotation curve of maser spots in NGC 1068 can be explained by the gravitational attraction of the disc orbiting the central black hole. Possible parameters matching observations are: black hole mass ≃ (1.2± 0.1) × 10 M⊙, disc outer edge & 1.3 pc, aspect ratio 3× 10 −3 . H R . 0.3, surface density Σ ∝ R , and disc mass ≃ (9.4±1.6)×10 M⊙. The physical conditions required for the excitation of masers are fulfilled, and the outer disc would stand in a gravitationally marginally stable state.

Non - Keplerian rotation in the nucleus of NGC 1068 : evidence for a massive accretion disk ?

The nucleus of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 1068 is believed to host a supermassive black hole. Evidence for the presence of a massive central object is provided by water maser emission, which displays a linear pattern in the sky, suggestive of a rotating disk. The rotating disk hypothesis is further strengthened by the declining shape of the derived rotation curve. Similar maser emission from NGC 42...

VLBI Imaging of Water Maser Emission from the Nuclear Torus of NGC 1068

We have made the first VLBI synthesis images of the H2O maser emission associated with the central engine of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 1068. Emission extends about ±300 km s−1 from the systemic velocity. Images with submilliarcsecond angular resolution show that the red-shifted emission lies along an arc to the northwest of the systemic emission. (The blue-shifted emission has not yet been imaged ...

Hst Detections of Massive Black Holes in the Centers of Galaxies

After correcting spherical aberration in the Hubble Space Telescope in 1993, the central masses of galaxies can be measured with a resolution 5 to 10 times better than can be achieved at the best terrestrial sites. This improvement in resolution is decisive for detecting the gravitational signature of massive black holes in galaxy nuclei. The discovery of small (r ∼ 100−200 pc) rotating gaseous...

Self - gravitating discs : what can we learn from the dynamics of maser spots ?

For a few nearby active nuclei, the disc orbiting the black hole is traced by water maser emission. By combining a simple model together with observed velocity profiles, we show that it is possible to put constraints on the black hole mass and on the distribution of matter (shape, density, size) in the outer disc. We then report possible parameters for the non-keplerian disc and for the black h...

The nuclear gas kinematics probed by water vapor maser emission has shown that two nearby active galaxies, NGC 1068 and NGC 4258, have a supermassive object in their nuclei and their masses are nearly comparable; a few 10 solar masses. Nevertheless, the activity of the central engine of NGC 1068 is more powerful by two orders of magnitude than that of NGC 4258. Since it is generally considered ...
