Price Impact and Survival

چکیده
Milton Friedman argued that irrational traders will consistently lose money, won’t survive and, therefore, cannot influence long run equilibrium asset prices. Since his work, survival and price impact have been assumed to be the same. In this paper, we demonstrate that survival and price impact are two independent concepts. The price impact of irrational traders does not rely on their long-run survival and they can have a significant impact on asset prices even when their wealth becomes negligible. We also show that irrational traders’ portfolio policies can deviate from their limits long after the price process approaches its longrun limit. We show, in contrast to a partial equilibrium analysis, these general equilibrium considerations matter for the irrational traders’ long-run survival. In sum, we explicitly show that price impact can persist whether or not the irrational traders survive. ∗Kogan and Ross are from the Sloan School of Management, MIT and NBER, Wang is from the Sloan School of Management, MIT, CCFR and NBER, and Westerfield is from the Economics Department, MIT. Price Impact and Portfolio Impact ∗
We study survival, price impact and portfolio impact in heterogeneous economies. We show that, under the equilibrium risk-neutral measure, long-run price impact is in fact equivalent to survival, whereas longrun portfolio impact is equivalent to survival under an agent-specific, wealth-forward measure. These results allow us to show that price impact and portfolio impact are two independent con...
متن کاملAn Analysis of the Stock Price Impact on the TSE and Accrual Management
This study examined the role of positive and negative discretionary accrual management in the stock price impact. A sample of 66 firms listed in Tehran Stock Exchange was selected for a ten-year period (2008-2017). Accrual management was found to lead to significant changes in stock prices, and uninformed investors incur trading costs caused by the stock price impact. The results showed two key...

The study attempts to find out the impact of buyback announcement on share price. Paired sample T-test is employed to compare share price before and after the buyback announcement. The analysis of variance is also used to find out whether there is any significant difference among industries in the price change due to buyback announcement. The study is carried out from 1st January 2005 to 31st D...
متن کاملThe Price Impact and Survival of Irrational Traders
Milton Friedman argued that irrational traders will consistently lose money, won’t survive and, therefore, cannot influence long run equilibrium asset prices. Since his work, survival and price influence have been assumed to be the same. Often partial equilibrium analysis has been relied upon to examine the survival of irrational traders and to make inferences on their influence on prices. In t...
