چکیده

We present a formal account of a genetic mechanism for Environmental Sex Determination (ESD) using a probabilistic process algebra (WSCCS). We exploit the process algebra to demonstrate that a single chromosome pair based polyfactorial system is intrinsically unstable. The system evolves, with a deterministic relationship between an animal's sex and its polyfactor count, to three possible forms of genetic mechanism: pure ESD; pure genetic sex determination (GSD) (both XY and ZW being possible outcomes); or a mixed solution with a 50/50 division between ESD and GSD. With a probabilistic dependence between gene count and sex we observe the rst and last of the above solutions (no pure GSD), but with population gene frequencies that can be far from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. A model of the systemic behaviour in the presence of recombination is presented, and the e ect of the relative recombination and evolution rates is discussed. Our process algebraic model is extended to account for the polyfactors being distributed over many possible chromosome pairs and demonstrates that only one essentially new stable solution is reachable. We demonstrate that within a multichromosome system there will almost always be a `leading' chromosome pair which determines sex, other chromosome pairs will have identical sex determining information upon both members of the pair, but not necessarily none.

On the Instability of Polygenic Sex Determination: the Effect of Sex-specific Selection.

A combination of analytical and simulation models is used to explore the initial evolution of genic sex determination from polygenic sex determination. Prior studies have indicated that polygenic sex determination is rare or absent in extant species but that it has likely played an important intermediate role in the evolution of other genetic sex-determination systems. This study explores why p...

A polygenic hypothesis for sex determination in the European sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax.

Polygenic sex determination, although suspected in several species, is thought to be evolutionarily unstable and has been proven in very few cases. In the European sea bass, temperature is known to influence the sex ratio. We set up a factorial mating, producing 5.893 individuals from 253 full-sib families, all reared in a single batch to avoid any between-families environmental effects. The pr...

Evolutionary diversity and turn-over of sex determination in teleost fishes.

Sex determination, due to the obvious association with reproduction and Darwinian fitness, has been traditionally assumed to be a relatively conserved trait. However, research on teleost fishes has shown that this need not be the case, as these animals display a remarkable diversity in the ways that they determine sex. These different mechanisms, which include constitutive genetic mechanisms on...

Sex without sex chromosomes: genetic architecture of multiple loci independently segregating to determine sex ratios in the copepod Tigriopus californicus.

Sex-determining systems are remarkably diverse and may evolve rapidly. Polygenic sex-determination systems are predicted to be transient and evolutionarily unstable, yet examples have been reported across a range of taxa. Here, we provide the first direct evidence of polygenic sex determination in Tigriopus californicus, a harpacticoid copepod with no heteromorphic sex chromosomes. Using geneti...

AMELX and AMELY Structure and Application for Sex Determination of Iranian Maral deer (Cervus elaphus maral)

In order to have a good perspective of wild animals, it is necessary to determine their population and genetic structure. It provides an opportunity to decide on better conservation managements. In the wilderness, due to the escapable nature and sometimes not having the distinguishable bisexual appearance, sex identification could be difficult by observing animals. The X- and Y- chromosome link...
