Research on Student Modeling

چکیده

What can we learn from observing students interacting with educational software? Wellinstrumented educational software can record students’ interactions over a period of several months—considerably longer than most psychology lab studies. Although long-term longitudinal studies exist, computers can record student-tutor interactions at much finer grain size; each student response, mouse click, and even spoken word can be recorded for later analysis. Thus, computer tutors occupy a “sweet spot” in collecting educational data; the data are detailed enough to detect fine-grained learning, and over a sufficient time frame to investigate longer-term learning. My research is on educational data mining, the study of answering educational and psychological questions from this rich data stream generated by computer tutors. Can we use these data to revise our theories about how students learn the domain material? To assess a student’s progress at learning? To determine which types of instruction benefit which students?

Student modeling and assessment in intelligent tutoring of software patterns

This paper presents the design, implementation, and evaluation of a student model in DEPTHS (Design Pattern Teaching Help System), an intelligent tutoring system for learning software design patterns. There are many approaches and technologies for student modeling, but choosing the right one depends on intended functionalities of an intelligent system that the student model is going to be used ...

Student Success Prediction in MOOCs

Predictive models of student success in Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are a critical component of effective content personalization and adaptive interventions. In this article we review the state of the art in predictive models of student success in MOOCs and present a dual categorization of MOOC research according to both predictors (features) and prediction (outcomes). We critically sur...

A Three-dimensional Perspective on the Current Trends in Student Modelling

Some of the recent research in student modeling is integrated in a three-dimensional space reflecting the important trends in the field. The dimensions are: levels of knowledge with respect to its ability to generate new knowledge, updating and organization. Within this space is shown the place of recent work concerning consistency maintenance, knowledge structuring and dynamic stereotypes, var...

Student Models for Prior Knowledge Estimation

Intelligent behavior of adaptive educational systems is based on student models. Most research in student modeling focuses on student learning (acquisition of skills). We focus on prior knowledge, which gets much less attention in modeling and yet can be highly varied and have important consequences for the use of educational systems. We describe several models for prior knowledge estimation – ...

Potential Applications of the Big Five Traits in Student Modeling

In this research initialization of the student model in a Socially Intelligent Tutoring System (SITS) by means of the Five-Factor Model of personality (Big Five) is considered. Where applicable, using the Five-Factor Model inventory provides for “getting to know the stranger (student)”. The student model this paper is based on is the one described by Heylen et al. While part of the student mode...

Constraint-Based Modeling: Representing Student Knowledge

A Student Model is used in Intelligent Tutoring Systems to guide the pedagogical process. Student modeling is a difficult problem because of the limited bandwidth that a computer/student interaction normally allows. SQL-Tutor is an example of an ITS incorporating constraint-based modeling, a knowledge-poor approach that restricts the knowledge representation to the number of domain constraints ...
