Link between the FEM and FVM formulations of anisotropic cardiac propagation in unstructured meshes

چکیده
Finite volume methods (FVM) and finite element methods (FEM) are popular tools to solve the parabolic partial differential equation describing the propagation of the electrical impulse in the heart muscle. This report demonstrates that these formulations are indeed equivalent provided that (1) linear elements are used for the FEM, and (2) the mass matrix is lumped. As a consequence, exact local flux conservation is ensured for both methods.

Application of the Finite Volume Method and Unstructured Meshes to Linear Elasticity
A recent emergence of the Finite Volume Method (FVM) in structural analysis promises a viable alternative to the well-established Finite Element solvers. In this paper the linear stress analysis problem is discretised using the practices usually associated with FVM in uid ows. These include the second-order accurate discreti-sation on Control Volumes of arbitrary polyhedral shape; segregated so...
متن کاملTorsional Surface Wave Propagation in Anisotropic Layer Sandwiched Between Heterogeneous Half-Space
The present paper studies the possibility of propagation of torsional surface waves in an inhomogeneous anisotropic layer lying between two heterogeneous half-spaces (upper and lower half-space). Both the half-spaces are assumed to be under compressive initial stress. The study reveals that under the assumed conditions, a torsional surface wave propagates in the medium. The dispersion relation ...

Finite element method (FEM) is one of the most famous methods which has many applications in varies studies such as the study of crack propagation in engineering structures. However, unless extremely fine meshes are employed, problem arises in accurately modelling the singular stress field in the singular element area around the crack tip. In the present study, the crack growth simulation has b...
متن کاملEffect of Initial Stress on Propagation of Love Waves in an Anisotropic Porous Layer
In the present paper, effect of initial stresses on the propagation of Love waves has been investigated in a fluid saturated, anisotropic, porous layer lying in welded contact over a prestressed, non-homogeneous elastic half space. The dispersion equation of phase velocity has been derived. It has been found that the phase velocity of Love waves is considerably influenced by porosity and anisot...
