چکیده

We present the first results of an ongoing spectroscopic survey of galaxies selected in the rest-frame ultraviolet. The source catalogue was constructed from a flux-limited sample of stars, galaxies and QSOs imaged at 2000 Å with the FOCA balloon-borne camera ( [6]). The redshift distribution obtained for 45 galaxies spans 0 < z < 0.3 and a high fraction of the spectra show intense nebular emission lines and ultraviolet-optical colors considerably bluer than can be accounted for via normal Hubble sequence galaxies. From the rest-frame ultraviolet galaxy luminosity function, and adopting a normal IMF, we use the integrated UV light to our survey limit to estimate the local volume averaged star formation rate. We find a value significantly larger than recent estimates and argue this must be a lower limit to the true value. Our results suggest the local abundance of star-forming galaxies has been underestimated in surveys based on optical data.

The Deep2 Galaxy Redshift Survey: the Role of Galaxy Environment in the Cosmic Star–formation History

Using galaxy samples drawn from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the DEEP2 Galaxy Redshift Survey, we study the relationship between star formation and environment at z ∼ 0.1 and z ∼ 1. We estimate the total star–formation rate (SFR) and specific star–formation rate (sSFR) for each galaxy according to the measured [O II] λ3727Å nebular line luminosity, corrected using empirical calibrations to ...

Measurement of Star - Formation Rate from H α in field galaxies at z = 1

We report the results of J-band infrared spectroscopy of a sample of 13 z = 1 field galaxies drawn from the Canada-France Redshift Survey, targeting galaxies whose redshifts place the rest frame Hα line emission from HII regions in between the bright night sky OH lines. As a result we detect emission down to a flux limit of ≃ 10 ergs cm s corresponding to a luminosity limit of ≃ 10 ergs at this...

Star formation properties of UCM galaxies

We present new near-infrared J and K imaging data for 67 galaxies from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid survey used to determine the SFR density of the local universe by Gallego et al. (1995). This is a sample of local star-forming galaxies with redshift lower than 0.045, and they constitute a representative subsample of the galaxies in the complete UCM survey. From the new data, complemen...

A GALEX/Spitzer survey of the Cl 0016+16 supercluster at z = 0.55: acceleration of the onset of star formation in satellite groups

We present the results of a panoramic (15 Mpc scale) survey of the Cl 0016+16 (z = 0.55) supercluster using Spitzer Space Telescope Multiband Infrared Photometer (MIPS) 24-μm and Galaxy Evolution Explorer near-ultraviolet (2500 Å; NUV) imaging. The supercluster regions probed are characterized by several dense nodes connected by a pronounced intermediatedensity filamentary structure. We have st...

Ultraviolet–to–far-infrared Properties of Local Star-forming Galaxies

We present the results of a multiwavelength study of nearby galaxies aimed at understanding the relation between the ultraviolet and far-infrared emission in star-forming galaxies. The data set comprises new ultraviolet (from HST STIS), ground-based H , and radio continuum observations, together with archival infrared data (from IRAS and ISO). The local galaxies are used as benchmarks for compa...
