Learning Optionality and Repetition

چکیده
Adjuncts are syntactic elements that are optional, transparent to selection, and often, though not always, repeatable. Classic examples are adjectives and adverbs. How do learners learn optionaility? How do they learn repeatability? I explore a variety of learners’ approaches to optionality and repeatability, including both human learners and learning algorithms. Mathematically, a learner is a function from an input text to a grammar. The kinds of patterns in the input that the learner is sensitive to depends on the assumptions that the particular learner makes about the nature of the language. In learnability theory, learners of Regular languages are much better understood than those for languages higher on the Chomsky hierarchy (Chomsky 1959). Since human languages are known to be Mildly Context-Sensitive (Joshi 1985), learning algorithms for such languages are clearly more relevant to actual human language learning; however, as research into such learners is still in its infancy, and since our understanding of Regular learners has driven higher-level learners (see for example Clark, Eyraud, & Habraud (2008)’s substitutable CF learner and Yoshinaka (2008)’s k,l-substitutable CF learner, which are extentions of Angluin (1982)’s 0and k-reversible learners to the context free level), I will look at learners low on the Chomsky hierarchy as well. I provide here three examples.

The Influence of Affective Variables on the Complexity, Accuracy, and Fluency in L2 Oral Production: The Contribution of Task Repetition
The main purpose of the study reported in this paper was to examine the interrelationships between L2 risk-taking, English learning motivation, L2 speaking anxiety, linguistic confidence, and low-proficiency English as a foreign language (EFL) learners’ speaking complexity, accuracy, and fluency (CAF). A secondary purpose was to test whether task repetition can influence the level of the mentio...
متن کاملHow We Learn Variation, Optionality, and Probability*
Variation is controlled by the grammar, though indirectly: it follows automatically from the robustness requirement of learning. If every constraint in an Optimality-Theoretic grammar has a ranking value along a continuous scale, and the disharmony of a constraint at evaluation time is randomly distributed about this value, the phenomenon of optionality in determining the winning candidate foll...
متن کاملOptionality in Optimality-Theoretic Syntax
Pre-theoretically, we can conceive of syntactic optionality as a name for a situation in which different ways of saying what seems to be the same thing show a clear correspondence in form. Such a situation may or may not be problematic for a given syntactic theory. Classic transformational grammar of the sixties acknowledges syntactic optionality by introducing a distinction between obligatory ...
متن کاملIssues of optionality in pitch accent placement
When comparing the prosodic realization of different English speakers reading the same text, a significant disagreement is usually found amongst the pitch accent patterns of the speakers. Assuming that such disagreement is due to a partial optionality of pitch accent placement, it has been recently proposed to evaluate pitch accent predictors by comparing them with multispeaker reference data. ...
متن کاملEffect of Spaced Repetition on Iranian EFL Learners’ Form Recall of English Single Words and Collocations
Acquiring vocabulary has always been recognized as a significant and challenging part of language learning process. In this study, the researcher examined the extent to which form recall of target lexical items by learners of English as a foreign language (EFL) is affected by a) repetition and b) by the type of target item; single words versus collocations. The treatment consisted of non-commun...
